Reaction to cow&gate? 6 month old.

My dd is 6 months old and weaning. Prior to this she was ebf. No food allergies in either family - I've eaten dairy since day 1 and she's been fine. We have also given her baby food (porridge daily and a pouch once) with dairy and she's been fine.

Yesterday, just to see if she would take it, I gave her Cow & Gate ready made formula in a sippy at 3 pm. She had a real bad night - 2 (normal looking) poos which I put down to all the veg she eats, but also a "curdled milk" posset at about 11. She then slept poorly (though this could be beibg changed 3 times, either nappy or grow). She has a cough but is recovering from a cold so can't say it's good related.

My gut instinct sorry bad pun is the cow&gate irritated her in some way.
I was hoping to use formula in a beaker for 1 or 2 feeds. Sad Is it worth trying another brand or should I just buy a better pump if I want her to drink sippy cup milk at lunch time?

...really hoping it's just too much veg and early weaning gripes!

It could be the cows milk, but I'd give her at least a couple of days break from the formula, to give her time to recover.

squizita · 22/03/2015 11:17

Yeah I will.

Just odd that she can handle it as an ingredient but not a drink even in baby form.
Or maybe not as I have a sister who is like that with milk and egg ... fine in a cake or sprinkled into a big dish, terrible gripes if she drinks a glass of milk or ate a whole egg.

I'm just like this and I'm cows milk protein intolerant. If you look on Allergy Uk there is some useful information on it Smile

squizita · 22/03/2015 13:57

Ah thanks I thought it was "all or nothing" iyswim.

Did you have a read of the allergy uk info?

JiltedJohnsJulie · 22/03/2015 14:03

Oh and this on kellymom explains dairy intolerance better than I ever couldSmile.

squizita · 22/03/2015 14:08

Jilted yes. The problem is she has a cold so I can't tell if it's a cold or a reaction iyswim. Her poos weren't "offensive" or loose - just woke her up!
I guess I'll go along to the GP and steer clear of the formula in the meantime!

Thanks for the Kelly mom link.
She's never had the slightest bother when ebf. So if it is cows milk, it must be very mild (I notice it also says cooked milk reduces the reaction which may be why she is fine with it in food but not formula to drink).

Still - looks like I need to not offer raw dairy for a few months. Smile Thanks.

X post! Thanks.

I've also spoken to several friends who have had similar nights when weaning with no allergy issues. Too much stewed fruit = much poo!

For balance, It's very very unlikely to be an allergy. Pooing more when beginning weaning makes sense, they are taking in more, so more comes out. Also being unsettled could be many many things. Give it a couple of days and try again if you want. There is no reason why the vast majority of babies would be 'intolerant' of Formula. Weaning can cause some digestive changes, extra wind maybe, change of poo colour, texture and frequency etc at the start, but that isn't in most cases a sign of something 'wrong'. Tbh if you read up on allergies and symptom spot you will find something, because you are looking for it. If she seems fine with cows milk in foods and you ate dairy during BF, it sounds like she's had a lot of exposure to dairy already with no ill effect.

Introducing solids does strange and terrible things to their nappies. You will look back fondly on those nice innofensive EBF poos!

Fwiw, my daughter is allergic to egg and milk, so needs special formula, but she had no reaction when breastfed and I eat dairy all the time. In her own diet though, it gives her a terrible rash. It's different for every baby.

squizita · 23/03/2015 13:27

Thanks. Mine has no rash and appears to have a straight forward cold now ... think I will re introduce milk in a couple of weeks. She's still mainly on veg at the moment.

My little one is 6months and formula fed cow and gate and fine of it however she gets poorly off the ready made ones! I wonder wether something is added to keep it ready made.

squizita · 24/03/2015 21:03

That's interesting! Someone who uses formula told me ready made Aptimel does this to their dc but not hipp powder. So maybe it is. Would be expensive to find out though! Might just pump. Grin

A lady I know with a CMPA sufferer baby chatted with me about it and saw my dd, reckons no way is it anything like the back arching/screaming/green slimy poo/no weight gain she associated with it.

And dd has a cold now.

Still gonna pump for nights off for the time being though.
