Breast feeding mums - How hungry do you get?

I'm sooooo hungry all day and even wake up hungry in the night too. I think I'd eat all day if I could, constantly looking in the cupboard and fridge for things to eat. Should I be this hungry? DS2 is 9wks and hasn't increased his feeds.

burstingbug- I was starving right up until ds started solids at 26 weeks. I am still feeding him just past his first birthday and I am now almost eating normally. I lost all my baby weight plus a bit more by 11 months. I would say to you that now is not the time to diet but sensible eating should be the order of the day. Well done on the breastfeeding, keep it up.

Ditto what most people have said - don't worry about it, just keep eating and listening to your body. Enjoy it while it lasts!! Plenty of time to diet when you stop bf whenever that may be.

FWIW I was back to pre-preg size at approx 6 wks despite eating 3 large healthy meals a day plus snacks (partic dark chocolate...) and I still felt hungry during the 5am feed.

Oh Lord I remember that hunger! Went to MIL's one day, arrived about 11.00am having not eaten since breakfast and was ravenous. MIL tried not to feed me, saying lunch would be ready at 1pm, I just bulldozed her out of the way and raided the fridge! No-one understands the hunger of a bf mother!

fluffyanimal · 25/10/2006 12:59

Yes, I was very hungry. I took cereal bars to bed with me for the night-time feeds! I'll also never forget that the MW laughed at me when she asked me what I was drinking and I said "lots of water" and she told me that as there's no calories in water I should be drinking hot chocolate! She was serious too...

I have breakfast, TWO lunches, dinner and numerous healthy snacks in between. I try to make sure I don't eat sugary foods as it plays havoc with your blood sugar but there's been times when i've asked dh to just stuff some chocolate in my mouth whilst breastfeeding as i thought i was gonna pass out!

yellowrose · 25/10/2006 19:56

amijee - lol with hubby stuffing chocolate in your face ! Now I remember what husbands are good for

disemboweledbint · 25/10/2006 19:59

on a normal day i eat 4 slices of malt loaf with cheese on and a packet of quavers. and that's it. unless dh comes home and can be bothered making us a proper tea, then i might eat that.

littlepiggie · 25/10/2006 20:59

just meant if i eat when i am hungry kind of thing and not worry about my weight, the happier and healther i will be.
I know all about me eating extra food making no difference but i do feel that listening to my body is the best way to help with bf.
