i have another post running in the feeling depressed section so i wont go into detail again here. anyway, ive been diagnosed with depression but GP reluctant to give AD's as im still BF ( 10.5 month old, 4 feeds aday).

ive hit rock bottom and feel i could benefit from AD's but am worried about the effect of them on DS.

Can anyone help with which AD's are safe when BF.

thanks

There are some safe ones - can't link right now due to tired brain fuzz but you will find a list on www.kellymom.com

There are many, many posts in the archives on mumsnet and if you look at breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk there is a whole page...better to go to a UK website, I think, as GPs might say US dosages and formulations and names may be different (and they would be right).

If GP still sticks to his guns, change your GP. This is so wrong to tell a depressed and bf mother she can't be treated

Great advice as always from tiktok. In my tired haze I forgot about the breastfeeding network - I've actually used their 'drugline' telephone/email service and they were really helpful. They also provided references for their advice which was helpful for my GP.

Would the NCT be able to help?

I take sertraline and was pregnant takeing it and then breastfed DD for 10 months while taking it.

I am very sure that she is fine .

It is also known as lustral, and I think zoflot in USA.

I take 100mg per day.

Hi, I know Ammitryptiline (spelling!) is safe for breastfeeding. When I was pregnant, my mum passed away, and I was seen by a maternal psychiatrist and she told me this was safe. It is an old anti-depresssant, but works really really well. I just feel in a sort of happy sleepy daze all the time. I've been on loads of different anti-depressants incl new ones like prozac, and lustral. They all worked but prozac and lustral made me tense, whereas amitryptiline is nice and soft and cuddly.
I know seroxat is also a drug recommended for use when breast feeding, because it doesn't stay in the system long, but that is the drug that was featured on Panorama becuse of the side effects.
Don't worry, there are drugs you can take. I was on amitriptiline all through my pregnancy, and have a lovely perfect daughter.

not an AD, but I was on propronol (sp?) (beta-blockers) for a while, now Diazepam while BFing.

hi, ive seen GP today and have been put on paroxitine (seroxat). he said that only trace amounts went through into milk and that the amount wasnt harmful to the baby. has anyone ever used this AD?
