Negative Effects of Breastfeeding?

AussieSim · 21/04/2004 13:08

I had a friend over today who told me that she saw a program on BBC1 just before easter that said that a study had revealed that breastfed babies were at risk of slower development, lower IQ etc etc, as so many pollutants and other nasties made their way through the mothers diet into breastmilk. I have tried searching on BBC but can only find positive stuff on breastfeeding, plus I would have thought any negative reports would have been well-discussed on here. I am still bfing my 15mo and I think the study must be crap but ... I would feel better if I could find it and discredit it. Can anyone help?

motherinferior · 21/04/2004 13:11

Yep, I'm with Coddy.

There is lots of info on this I will get the link for you. Basically most happends whilst youare pregnant and then bf is more benefical than bf for it.
These toxins are in lots of things as well btw including I believe the teats, bottles etc.

That's not true. That programme was SO irresponsible. Shockingly so, IMO

kiwisbird sent me the letter sent to the show by babymilk action. She did say anyone was welcome to email her for info.

This might be helpful toomidwives response

Speaking as a journalist, ks, I understand it as 'vague bollocks employed mainly by people either trying to get you to buy overpriced skincare or to give up eating anything interesting'

Here is the other side of the coin contaminatedformula

mum2three · 21/04/2004 13:54

I decided not to watch this programme.Ibottle fed my first child and mixed fed my second and completely breast fed till 6months the third.I feel so angry about these sorts of programmes as if being a mum is not hard enough! I did what i thought was the best for all my babies each time.Weather it's breast or bottle trying to be a a good parent is what is important.

tiktok · 21/04/2004 14:01

Astonishing your friend got that message from the programme, AussieSim - there was nothing in it to suggest bf put babies at risk of lower IQ, as far as I can remember.

There was a lot of discussion on mumsnet - the thread will still be there.

kiwisbird · 21/04/2004 14:06

I got my info via the NCT e mailing list groups, as I am also a supporter of baby milk action too..
I still wonder at the basics, while formula is important and needed for many infants...
how can a product designed by chemists, scientists and made by cows possibly be as safe as breastmilk, cows are not immune to toxins, nor is the grass and fodder they eat organic and/or chemical free(rotting cows for dinner anyone - remember that little gem)
If they had only broached the contaminant angle from a holistic perspective it woudl have been so much more worthwhile a report.
Anyone else boarding for the maternal guilt trip?

Utka · 21/04/2004 19:53

Slightly off topic, but I'm also really irritated by the pseudo-scientific jargon used in skincare adverts - nanospheres?!!!!

willow2 · 21/04/2004 21:42

Utka - slightly rounder and longer than a nanosecond.

kiwisbird · 21/04/2004 21:49

slightly less vocal than a nanamouskourie
