breastfeeding and dirty nappies

My dd is nearly 5 weeks old and was having dirty nappies everyday sometimes twice a day. But she hasn't had one since Friday and I'm wondering if I should be worried? She's feeding, sleeping fine and having wet nappies, just wondered if it was possible for her to be constipated?

Highly unlikely in a bf baby, Lucy. Many bf babies start to have gaps between poos at around this age. Lots about this on mumsnet. Frequent pooing goes with the early weeks, and while some babies continue with it, many don't, and have days between.

thanks Tiktok that is just what I needed to hear!!
Can I ask a quick question while you're still around? Dd has caught ds' cold and is very congested. I don't need to give her any medicine do I? Just lots of tlc and feeding?

There's not much you can do about snuffles. Dd has a horrid cough so I'm taking her to the doc tomorrow as it may be an infection. I hope not. She's only 3 months old.

Lucy, can't give medical advice, sorry!

If LO is congested is really hard with feeding and m,ost stuff is 3 months plus. My HV said to try steam in her room and other people suggested those nasel aspirators. Have to say haven't used one but it's so hard if they get bunged up. It's not like they can blow their nose!

I used Karvol on a muslin tied to my ds' cot and it worked great to clear his congestion. Propped up the end of the cot slightly too. Oh by the way, the poo thing is fine as was said before - just look out for the monster poo that's coming your way!!

LucyJones - a new mum from our September 2006 babies thread (feel free to come and find us!) just spent a night in hospital with a very congested newborn and what they did was basically the same a using a snot sucker (sorry, 'nasal aspirator'!) and she said it worked great and went and bought one of her own. If you're worried though call your HV/GP for a professional opinion.

Good to know the frequent pooing may start to calm down soon...

LucyJones,

Apart from an aspirator and steam, try to keep your baby upright as much as possible (Our swing was perfect) I also recommend warm chammomile tea (a couple of ounces). Don't be surprised if this lasts a few weeks. It takes babies longer to kick a cold.
