Is my baby allergic to formula?

My DS is 5.5 months old and has been EBF (although had SMA in special care when first born). Since he hit 4 months I've been lucky if he's had 3 hours of solid sleep in one go at night, so a week ago we decided to do 1 bottle of formula a day in the evening (Hipp organic) to see if it settles him and help him sleep more. So far it's not working on his sleep Confused, but he does seem to enjoy the bottle so I'm continuing! I have noticed though that he often has a poo straight after a bottle. He also has gone from 1 poo every few days on breastmilk to sometimes 3 a day! Could this be a sign that his body isn't agreeing with the formula? His poo's are greedy/mustardy and sometimes a little slimy - only a little. Sorry for being so graphic!!!

I'd like to continue on the bottle but fear i'm doing harm - or am I just being paranoid? Maybe I shouldn't have started him on Hipp when he had already had SMA at birth??

Hipp organic has an added prebiotic which can upset a wee tummy at first. Maybe try one without the prebiotic like cow and gate? That's what I have used when mix feeding.
If he was allergic you would know about it.

Thanks whereisthewitch. I didn't know that - I'll google it. That will be the third formula he's tried, if I change - will that upset his tummy even more?

No it shouldn't if you use SMA or cow and gate as neither have the prebiotic.
Aptimil and hipp have the prebiotic so probably best to avoid those if you are only using it sporadically and they aren't agreeing with his tummy.
Does it annoy him when you have dairy in your diet? If not then I doubt he is allergic to formula, it's just finding the right one, my ds got constipated with SMA and the opposite effect with hipp and aptimil.

Formula and breastmilk poos are very different. DS1 is ff but was ebf until 4.5 mths. He used to poo after every feed and do nice sweet smelling yellow ones, now it's once a day and they're greener, sticky and definitely not sweet smelling!

Cow and Gate does contain pre-biotics as it is pretty much the same as Aptamil (same manufacturer too)

Pre-biotics in formula are known to have an effect on baby's guts....it's not thought to be harmful.

AFAIK, all standard infant formula in the UK has the added pre-biotics.

Perhaps have a word with your HV?
