use of a dummy - does it cause nipple confusion in BF baby?

hi!

My baby is now 9 days old and he is very 'sucky'. He will feed quite happily then will just play with my nipple for ages until he goes to sleep. this doesn't bother me during the day but hen he takes an hour to drift off to sleep at night following a feed i find it exhausting as he is just comfort licking n sucking. He will eventually fall a sleep but once i put him back in his moses basket he will wake up again wanting to 'suck' again.

My question is ... it it ok to give him a dummy at this early age just during the night to settle him?
any advice much appreciated.

there is so much conflicting advice jenny but from my own personal experience I found it did confuse my ds. I would find it useful to get him off to sleep but then the during following feeds he would fuss so much more (bearing in mind would normally be middle of night) i found it just ceated this new problem.

I simply let ds use me as his dummy for those initial few weeks and he doesnt seem to comfort suck as much now. Upside is now he can get himself off to sleep without dummy etc and if he wakes during the night he only needs a quick feed (not having to sterilize and offer dummies)

Congratulations on your new baby btw!

DS1 - dummy until 2.5 years, bf until about a year

DS2 - dummy until about 18 mths, bf for about a year, plus both DSs also had bottle during the day from around 10 and 7 mths respectively

DD - still has dummy (at night!) and is 3 in a couple of weeks, was bf until she was just over 2 (wouldn't take a bottle though)

No confusion whatsoever
