Cracked nipples - anyone tried gentian violet?

I've got a very painful crack in one nipple - where the nipple itself meets the areola. It goes around about half the base, and seems to be getting worse not better.

I'm fairly sure it's down to thrush - both DS and I keep getting it on and off, but he's on permanent ab's for kidney problems, so we're struggling to get rid of it properly.

I've got Nystan and Daktarin creams for my nipples, and also lansinoh, but has anybody else got any other miracle creams I could try? Also, has anybody tried gentian violet treatment? My mum says that's what she used when I was a baby, and there is quite a bit about it on the kellymom.com website. I'd try anything at the moment.

i tried all creams and ointments and the ONLY thing that COMPLETELY healed me was the silverette sterling silver mini healing cups. I was completely healed within 30 hours and pain free. They are FANTASTIC but not known in the UK - they are MASSIVE in Italy (this is where i got them).

However, i now know they are available in the UK from www.breastfeedingheaven.co.uk this company also does a very similar product in the form of a pad, which has silver healing properties, but i didn't try this so could comment. I do know though... (from my experience!) that silver is the way to go!!

an extremely experienced doula recommends gentian violet - but beware - it stains!!

I've heard about silver being good for healing too. However, are you absolutely certain he's latched on properly on that side? If it's just not healing because of the thrush, then fair enough, but it's worrying that it's actually getting worse - that shouldn't happen!

thebigbadmouse - I think I made it worse during a couple of night feeds. I drift off to sleep, and I think ds2 latches on and off, probably incorrectly some of the time. I've been feeding on the other side during the night for a couple of nights, which has stopped it getting any worse for a few days, but it's not healing at all.

determination - will certainly have a look at those cups.

lulumama - yes, I've read that too. Not so worried about our clothes, but don't like the idea of a purple DS2!
