2 month old won't feed after sedation

In hospital with 2 month old dd who was sedated earlier this morning for a procedure. That was at 11am and she hasn't fed since (actually since 4am.since she was nil by mouth). She is drowsy but cranky and ebm and soother both also refused - it's like she can't suckle anymore Confused

Please help, we're both getting distressed.

Have you tried skin to skin, stripping you both off and getting into bed? Or even in a warm bath?

Assuming you are in hospital, ask one of the paeds nurses for help.

Could you hand express a little and spoon/syringe/cup feed a bit that way? She might perk up a bit when she's got something in her and be able to suckle better.

agree about expressing.
It might just be that the sedation is stopping her mouth muscles from working properly.

so, you could express and then dip your finger into it and into her mouth, or get a feeding syringe from the nurses.

But please do ask to speak to a lactation nurse about it - just in case there are problems

Thanks all. Sorry it's a bit complicated because she is in for hernia surgery but they haven't done it yet because of swelling - meanwhile hernia keeps popping back out- it's out again now and nurse thinks this is why she won't feed (can't focus cause of pain). I will check if there is a lactation expert here ( doubt it on NYE). I've been spurting milk into her mouth but she must be starving. Surgeon is coming soon to decide what to do (surgery now or another manual reduction). Sorry for rambling but thanks for all your tips

I don't have advice green, only wanted to say hang in there. It sounds so hard for you both. I hope both the operation and feeding go well.

Ask a nurse to phone the mat dept. There may be a midwife there who can help.

Thanks for checking inSmile she had the surgery and it went well, she was in a fair bit of pain before and after so nurse felt this was why she was too agitated to feed. She's on good pain relief now and although it was hard work through the night I got her feeding again. Thank Christ because my boobs were on the verge of becoming dodgy as not much time to express etc. Happy new year Smile
