Breastfeeding - was it DS/DD who stopped, or you?

Planning ahead here, but, I was wanting to stop BFing when DS is 1, but, dont want to be mean. Do many 1 yr olds stop on their own?

My dd stopped on her own at 17 months. Her feeds had gradually been reduced to one morning feed a day, led by her. For some reason we missed it one morning and she never fed again.

I stopped all mine at 6 months. I didn't really enjoy it as they got older, and as they went onto solids I gradually cut down and replaced bfeeds with formula. Not sure how it would work as they get older though.

I'm afraid I didn't get to 1 with my DS, but at 7.5 months he just stopped breastfeeding. I had about a week where I would try to get him to latch on but gave up after nearly having my nipple bitten off! If you are happy to continue I say let him decide when he wants to stop. If you want to stop though cut back on one feed every few days. This helps stop you from getting uncomfortable, but also might be less dramatic for your son. Ds1 I stopped when he was about 18 mths iirc

Ds2 self weaned at about 11 mths

dd, nearly 10 months and not showing any signs of wanting to drop any feeds at all

I stopped DSs at 10 and 7 months (due to work with DS1 and family death with DS2) during the day, but they continued during the night/first thing until they were over a year, before they dropped them. I didn't have any compelling reason to stop DD, and she finally self weaned at 2.1 years.

2 of mine stopped around 14-16 months while I was pregnant with the next.

I stopped the 3rd around 6 months as we had a horrendous thrush saga.

Both mine stopped of their own accord at 7 months - I think solids were just far more interesting. I tried to encourage the 2nd one to keep going, but he just ended up constipated as he wasn't getting enough fluids. If you keep going till one then you've done a great job and you shouldn't feel guilty if you have to 'force' him to give up the boob!

My dd self weaned just after her 2nd birtday coz i was pregnant.. i was fine with this as she decided on her own. I think that is a sign of confidence when they decide they dont want any more.

Since then though, it seems i am no longer needed and Daddy is her favourite parent!

Dd still going strong, not showing any signs of giving up any feeds when I'm around (although happy with cows milk when I'm not), at 14 months. Under pressure from dh now to stop. Feeling torn between the two of them. Also I like the closeness of bf, and just read another thread which reminded me of all the health benefits for both Mum and Babe of bf to 2 years and onwards.

Question to Determination: how did you get pregnant?? Chance would be a fine thing. (a) no periods, and (b) think the hormones reduce interest in sex. Sorry to hijack debate QQSB, but would appreciate any ideas and / or suggestions...

I stopped bf dd2 at 22 mo as I was 20 wks pg with ds, was totally knackered from night feeds and had got fed up with her hanging onto my nipple with her teeth. But it had become more of a sleep habit more than anything else. She won't drink cow's milk though.

WBM, my periods had returned by about 9 or 10 mo. Dd2 would have been about 19 mo when I got pg. Totally agree, bf kills your sex drive stone dead, but it was our wedding anniversary...

dd1 stopped when I became preg with dd2 9within days) she was 13 months

both mine stopped more or less of own accord - ds at 12 months (started biting/not interested) and dd at 13 months (not interested).

I had to stop DS's nightly feed at about 15 months as I had to have a couple of nights in hospital. He gave it up fairly easily - it was the cuddle he liked as much as anything.
DD stopped of her own accord, at about 11 months I think - she preferred her thumb.
