Is it safe to colour your hair whilst you are breastfeeding?

My hair dresser/colourist said he would not colour or would be very cautious about colouring women who have just given birth/bfing. Apparently all the raging hormones and the fact that some women have a problem losing hair in post natal period can cause problems, also hair texture etc can change which can mean die doesn't always take properly..

Having said all that think it can depend on type of die being used chemical/vegtable - I would say proceed with caution! Hth

I bf DD for two years and if I hadn't dyed my hair in that time I would have looked the tired, middle aged mother I felt like inside I can understand what M2Ms hairdresser was saying, but I think once your established and all the hormones have settled down that shouldn't be a problem. As far as chemicals crossing over into the milk are concerned, I've never heard anything to suggest that happens, or that it is a potential problem.

Oh dear....not another myth to make bf something that's difficult or odd or potentially dangerous.

There is no possible way that dyeing your hair could affect your baby or your milk.

The dye does not get into your body in any way - it does penetrate the hair shaft, but that's it.

Hair texture may well change because of pg so a test patch probably makes sense if you are cautious.

Hi, I am still bf my one year old. Was bottle blonde pre baby, had roots done 1 week before due date (wanted to look ok in the pictures, Ha ha ha after 46 hours labour was not looking my best ha ha ha). lasted about 4 months (but did not go out much!!) then went bark brown as no time to get roots done, no problems and have not heard you should not dye it while bf. Have heard you should avoid dying during pregnancy but i think highlights are OK, correct me if I am wrong??
