Is it ok to make up bottles like this?

Now ds is 7 months can I can give up sterilising, wash the bottles in the dishwasher and just put tap water in with formula when I need to make one up? Or do I need to fanny around doing the boiling, cooling a bit, adding formula and cooling more thing?

Well I would give up the sterilising, but I would still boil water. Not sure why... just would. Also, once the water is in the bottles surely they can stay on the side or in the fridge until needed and then you could put the powder in.

why do you need to add formula and cool more? can't you just keep the water at room temp until you add the formula?

anchovies · 05/10/2006 00:15

They now recommend the water is 60 degrees plus before you add the formula as the formula isn't sterile. But hey if my bottles and water aren't sterile what would the formula matter?! I know what you mean about the boiling the water thing it seems funny to me as well to use tap water but not sure why?

At that age with the DSs I would have made the bottle with part boiling water, part cold tap water, so it was the right temperature and then added the powder.

i think it says on some official govt page that you don't have to boil water after 6 months. i can't be bothered, i must say.

I think I started using tap water at about that age (still steralised bottles because we had no dishwasher). I was mixed feeding - so presumably they were still getting some immunity from that.

Frankly so much crap goes in their mouths at that age - freshly made formula was the least of my worries . I did make up each bottle as needed though - no faffing around pre-preparing and reheating !

How do you mix formula with tap water?
Am I being a bit thick, surely cold water won't mix the formula and aren't you not supposed to use water from a hot tap?

I think dishwasher is fine for washing. I would still boil water, if your bottles are going to sit around for 24hrs. I never made up formula with hot water, just mixed up a bottle as it was needed. Although some formulas (like the thickened ones) won't mix in cold water.

I think we used Farleys - just added the powder to tap water and shook - seemed ok !

i run the tap for a good while, put in the water, stick it in the microwave for 30 secs and then add the powder. it's certainly the laziest way i could find to do it. when i'm out i pour in boiling water and use those little tommee tippee powder containers that you drop into the neck of the bottle.
