Fenugreek powder tastes like..

Cr*p. Blush I bought some fenugreek capsules to help increase milk supply (ebf 3 week old dd) which arrived today and realised I can't take them as the capsules are made from gelatine. So I decided to open them up and just down the powder inside the capsule with a glass of water instead. Not doing that again Confused
Will attempt to mix next dose with juice before downing juice.

Is it ok to take the fenugreek this way? I know it's not guaranteed to increase milk supply but has helped some women so worth a try I figure.

I have heard of fenugreek tea, don't know if you could try the powder that way - would probably be nasty! Perhaps bake them into lactation cookies.

I tried fenugreek for a while but was never sure if it helped or not.

Why are you concerned about your supply, if you don't mind me asking?

Hi Sweet dd was not gaining weight in the first few weeks, she has made mini gains but the last few days she still seems uubgty especially in the late afternoon/evening. I feed her on both breasts and keep switching when she squirms/cries a bit and after a while I hear her swallowing so she does get some milk. I keep going til she falls asleep but can't help but feel that milk could do with increasing. I pump where possible but have a house to run with two older dcs! Hv visiting end of the week so will see if dd has fattened up any.
Lol@ lactation cookies.

I found fenugreek make me smell of curry! Oats in porridge and as much rest as feasibly possible (the housework will still be there any time you have extra energy to tackle it - as long as everyone has something to eat and something to eat, everything else can just wait). Rope any visitors into doing a chore if at all possible, and then get them to take the older dc out for an hour!

Fenugreek made me smell like curry, it was awful and I stopped taking it. I'm amazed you managed to take it like that, even in capsule form it made me heave.

oneofthosenicemuslims2015 · 21/10/2014 20:54

I read online it made you smell of maple syrup (Is that similar to curry?!)
I just took second lot mixed with some water, still horrid but quicker and easier than the first time.

Not at the risk of sounding incredibly thick - do you mean regular porridge oats? I've started having a big bowl of porridge in the morning with full fat milk though I've no idea if the full fat milk has an effect on anything or if it's wishful thinking

Schro taste buds of steel from years of eating dodgy stuff no doubt Grin

It made me stink and worse than that it had a similar effect on my bowels as going into an Indian restaurant and asking for the hottest dish they don't usually serve to the British.

WebMD said recent studies have concluded no benefit for milk production either. Sad sorry! I gave up on it pretty quick!

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 21/10/2014 21:42

I don't think it does smell like maple syrup, maple syrup smells sweet, this is more like 3 day old vindaloo! When I was using it, I was having about 3 showers a day and carrying wipes and superstrong deodorant in my bag, until I realized it was everywhere on my skin, hair, wee etc that smelled of it, futile!

If you are really having problems with milk production, could you ask about taking domperidone instead? That really does help and is what I used when the fenugreek got tossed in the bin.

I went from having a silly crazy over-supply to having an undersupply due to going to work and a latch that wasn't working/crazy letdown speed that made him unlatch/only really feeding from one side, the domperidone allowed me to mainly express to stop the hellish problems with keeping him latched.

oneofthosenicemuslims2015 · 22/10/2014 04:56

Thanks Schrowill look into domperidone if next weigh doesn't go well as im feeding frequently etc.
I can live with smelling like curry for a week or two but hoping dd won't smell too..
Lottie even if it has a placebo effect I figure it's worth a shot! Or an interesting experiment in how to smell like your favourite foods Confused

Just regular porridge, not sure if there's any real evidence, but eating oats was one of the things that kept cropping up online when I was looking at how to increase supply. Figure it can't do any harm & if nothing else, makes sure you at least have a decent breakfast!

IHeartLockhart · 23/10/2014 18:48

Porridge oats, flaxseed/linseed and Brewers yeast are the other ingredients that are meant to boost supply.
I will either have porridge or shredded wheat with a couple of spoonfuls of flaxseed meal on top for breakfast. I don't know how much it helps but I've always got plenty of milk.

You could always try making lactation cookies as well.
