Severe pain in left breast- any ideas?

I recently stopped feeding my 13-month DH when I realised I was pregnant. I had been getting some pain in both the nipples and the breast itself but contributed both to pregnancy. However since I stopped the nipple pain has gone but the left breast pain is so severe I cant bear it any more. Any ideas anyone what it could be and what I should do about it? It is really getting to me now. The pain is constant and to touch it is unbearable- quite localised in one particular area.

Canyou - you need to see a doctor, I think. It's probably mastitis, may be an abscess...abscess is supposed not to hurt but mothers I have spoken to say it certainly does. Think of it as a boil in your breast

Don't let it go the whole weekend. I suggest you go to wherever you can get emergency GP treatment (probably not A&E unless you are desperate as you will wait forever and they may not know about breasts).

I agree it sounds like mastitis - have you felt feverish at all too? Its a good idea to go to the out of hours gp as they can get the antibiotics in you straight away and it will probably feel a lot better by Monday. I had to do this twice when I had mastitis and they don't mind at all so don't worry about calling the emergency dr.

thank you. i have had mastitis before and it didnt feel quite like this but this might just be much milder or affecting me in a different way. but i am in the early stages of pregnancy so worried what antibiotics i will be able to receive.

Hi I had a pain like red hot pokers through my left nipple/boob, and it was caused by my daughter having oral thrush which was subsequently passed through to me via breast feeding. However, the first time I went to the doctor, they said that I couldn't catch it from her. But then as it continued, I asked the health visitor and she said I could definitely get it. I started rubbing on my daughter's medicine onto the nipple (under instruction from the health visitor) and it cleared in less than a week.
