Hi, my nipples have become sore over the last week ish. Its worse when she feeds (obviously!).
She's been poorly recently, had an ear infection and has been miserable after her mmr so has been waking therefore feeding more in night than normal( 3 feeds rather than 1).
Do you think that could be the only reason they are hurting? That they are not used to the exrtra sucking? I don't think its thrush. Thanks

does she bite?

do you have breast pain between feeds?

Eulalia · 27/09/2006 20:00

Sounds like its just the extra feeding. My ds is the same age and sometimes if he's tired he feeds more or wriggles about and tugs and it can get more sore. If its still sore after a few more days then probably best to go to the doctor.

princessmel · 27/09/2006 20:01

She doesn't bite on purpose. Occasionaly catches nipple with teeth but by mistake. No pain between feeds but nipples are tender to touch.

Could well be due to the extra sucking. My ds is 14 months, and if he has extra feeds over a few days then I start to get a bit sore.

I've also noticed that as a new tooth comes through it rubs a bit more and until my nipples toughen up in that area, then I'm very "aware" of it for a few days.

princessmel · 27/09/2006 20:04

Thats so true Miaou, I was wondering why it was hurting a while ago (not this pain but before) and then I noticed a new spikey tooth!!! They do toughen up don't they.?

She's not getting a tooth this time though.

It must just be the extra feeds then.

my ds when he was getting a tooth used to just catch me with it. I got a small cut - rather like a paper cut & as it was always opened when he fed - it took ages to heal. Was really painful. I only found the small cut by really checking out for a prob. I used Lansinoh cream & this helped. Best wishes xxx

Did your lil one have antibiotics...if so, it may well be thrush!

princessmel · 28/09/2006 13:22

Hi, no she hasn't had antibiotics. I think its all the extra feeding. Just wasn't sure before i asked on here if adding a couple of extra feeds would make that much of a difference. She only fed once last night though so hopefully they'll feel better at next feed. xxxx

This suggestion is a long shot, but just occasionally, it is the reason for unexpected sore nipples - if your daughter has had a different food or drink recently you might be sensitive to her saliva.

princessmel · 28/09/2006 13:36

Really? Wow! I don't think she has. I'm trying to remember... Are you a bf counseller(s) Ticktok? You always know the answers to bf questions

Yes, I am an NCT bfc....but no, I don't always know the answers, sorry!!

As I say this is really unusual as a cause of soreness, but the case that sticks in my mind was a mum of a baby aged about 7 months who was eating jarred food. The mother had a known dairy allergy, but could eat meat ok. Turned out she was sensitive to something in the baby's jarred beef dinner, and IIRC it was a milk-based additive or thickener or something.

princessmel · 28/09/2006 13:50

Hi, dd only eats food that I make for her so I know whats in it and I'm not allergic to anything as far as I'm aware. Do you think its prob the extra feeds too?

Jst noticed a cut in the left nipple, on the under side. Do you think thats why they are sore or has it cut BECAUSE they are sore???

Ouch, poor you! When ds was a newborn, I used Lansinoh which really helped protect sore nipples.

My ds (12 months) always leaves teeth marks, but hasn't yet cut me (apart from the 1 deliberate bite). He does scratch and pinch me though. Doesn't look pretty! Hope the soreness improves.

canyoukeepasecret · 29/09/2006 18:12

Exactly the same happened to me at exactly te same age DD but I then realised I was pregnant!

princessmel · 29/09/2006 18:23

OMG I'm pretty sure I'm not preggers. I 'can't' be as have used condoms the very few times we've had sex!

Its not so bad that I can't feed her but it is sore.

I'll get some of that cream.

There's also the cabbage leaf in the bra thing but I think that might be for mastitis. Haven't tried it myself, but I've heard it works amazingly well!

If it's a cut from her tooth try bf in different positions. I found lying down didn't hurt but bf in the cradle hold did. It was just where my ds sort of rested his new tooth when he bf & slept. The cream really helped. It took about 2 weeks to heal & was ok.

princessmel · 30/09/2006 08:22

Hi, no spot on nipple, just some flaky dry skin where its trying to repair itself I suppose. Feeding her lying down last night wasn't as bad actually.
Last night she slept the best we've had for a few weeks. Slept 7pm-3.30am without waking then fed, then /wimpered on and off for an hour then slept till 6. Believe me thats better than it has been.! We finally got an antibiotic ear spray for her yesterday( after 2 trips to docs over a week) so I think its started to work already. Hopefully when her feeds go back to just one at night it will give my nipple more time to heal. Thanks for help xxxx
