DS is 17 lb and 20 weeks - how much milk, roughly, should he be having per day?

Thanks

34 - 40 oz. Assuming milk is his only food.

What's he taking at the mo? Are you worried that he's having too much or not enough?

As a general rule, if he's draining every bottle then you need to give him an extra fl oz per bottle until he leaves a bit behind. He'll only drink as much as he needs.

If you're worried he's not drinking enough compared to the guidelines on the tin then ignore the guidelines!! That's all they are.

My ds drank well over the 'recommended' amount - about 50 fl oz a day at that age - but my friend's dd was doing well if she had 20 fl oz a day. They're both absolutely normal heights and weights for their ages now, so it all depends on the individual child.

Well, we started weaning him last week.

He currently has approx 21 oz a day - if we're lucky.

Is that enough? He seems happy and is putting on weight but just doesnt seem to have much milk

I would say that's all he needs then. My dd had a much smaller appetite for milk than ds, she just wasn't bothered by it really. She still put weight on, stayed on a stable centile line and slept well and was happy so I figured she had to be having enough for her needs.

If he's been having that amount for a while and hasn't suddenly reduced it then I'd relax and just consider that he has a small appetite.

The only other advice I'd give you is to make sure that you give him milk before solids for the time being. Solids fill them up much more quickly but don't have the nutrients or calories that they get from milk so it's important not to reduce his milk intake.
