Apparently some breast milk contains harmful toxins

have a look here here

hercules · 06/04/2004 19:33

and here

Just goes to show how it's old news and not the full picture!

I felt really angry about the programme. It mentioned comparative levels of toxins in the nottingham mothers' milk, but not actually how high these toxin levels were e.g. 0.0001 parts per thousand etc. and how dangerous they were for their babies. All the programme will do is undo all the work that midwives, breastfeeding counsellors, NCT etc etc strive to do to encourage more people to breastfeed. the programme had a point, maybe, but it was so lacking in quantifiable facts. It was just RUBBISH! And that poor NCT woman put on the spot near the end!

Seabird · 06/04/2004 22:07

oh thank you SO much ladies for all your comments on this thread. I was so pissed off with the programme for adding to the mothering guilt heap but you lot have given me the confidence to put it back in perspective. Particularly appreciated your views on organic makeup, as my mum - my usual barometer of good sense in most things - seemed to think this might be worth trying!!!

eddm · 06/04/2004 22:33

Yeah, but was she going to treat you to an entire new range? May be worth encouraging her!

kiwisbird · 06/04/2004 22:55

just had email from NCT chief on their e group to complain to ITV as they take their complaints seriously... considering the NCT willingly took part this leads me to believe that the full interview was not aired

kiwisbird · 06/04/2004 22:59

also have the blurb about toxins in breastmilk from the NCT ctc me if anyone wants them by email

hercules · 07/04/2004 10:07

an I have that kiwisbird? My mum taped the show for me as she has never been totally convinced about my bf so would be good to show her.
Thanks.

My comment about mumsnet being generally "intelligent and non-hysterical" just relfects the advice and thoughts of many posters I have read on a number of topics. I put much more faith in mumsnet than I do in the newspapers and most TV news. I don't read a daily paper now because I find the slants they all have so objectionable. It's purely because there are so many points of view expressed on each topic here that I think you can gain a well-rounded take on what's being discussed.
Who's to say people from all walks of life and background can't be intelligent, anyway ?

hercules · 07/04/2004 10:32

Agree with you there moomin. I have to confess that when my mum was talking to me about thew show lastnight I read out bits from this thread to her and said I was reading from a newspaper who had spoken out against it. She believed me although i did also tell her what was in my links below.
Probably came across abit strong on my earlier post as what you've said is far more true.
