Why is there no bottle with a teat out the side?

It seems weird to have to try and feed our baby with a bottle you have to tip up vertical to use. It means he has to be lying flat on his back, unlike when he is breastfeeding.

A bottle with a teat at 90 degrees to the bottle would mean the bottle was fully inverted while he was still feeding like he would whilst breast feeding.

It seems so obvious there must be a reason I'm missing, so can someone please tell me why I'm being stupid?

chicco, playtex and evenflo seem to make angled bottles but there doesnt seem to be much availability of them in the UK

Why would you tip the bottle up vertical and lie baby flat? I always fed in bf position with bottle at about 45/60° which is fine and natural except for the last 1/4oz ish?

I think there is one maybe by nuk but I'm not 100%

Nope. No diagram needed. I dont dispute that a bottle with a teat at a 90degree angle would be effective, however I dispute your claim that baby "must be lying flat on his back".

The baby doesn't need to lie flat on their back. Yes op you are missing something , you tilt the bottle!

Feeding flat on the back is actively advised against here, isn't it there? Because of it causing ear infections, I was told.

I also would have thought there would be a choking hazard with laying flat. Certainly id never drink anything laid totally flat so itd feel odd feeding my baby the same way

I tend to feed DS2 leaning back against me (his back to my stomach) so reclined slightly, and tilt the bottle up.

I get what you mean and those bottles do sound quite good. But I can't remember ever having to put DD flat on her back, she was always at 45 degrees or something like that.

No. Do we need to photobomb the thread with pictures of babies feeding from bottles to establish that a baby doesn't have to lie flat on his back with the bottle vertical?

I bottle fed my 3 dcs and held them like the woman in the picture, isn't that sort of how everyone does it? I don't remember any issues with the milk not coming out of the bottle or having to hold it vertical?

Are you mix feeding? If so, a BF clinic advised me to feed baby on her side with the bottle so it was like BFing (put a cushion and towel under baby's head) as we were struggling to establish BFing and they said this would help to reduce bottle/teat confusion. Does that help?

But otherwise, yes, tilt the bottle and ensure the teat has milk in so that baby isn't gobbling air.

Garnett, I think a picture might be a good idea, I haven't been judgy but I certainly don't understand what you mean. Seeing as no one else seems to either I'd suggest it's your explanation rather than our understanding. Rather than getting on your high horse why not expand? Fwiw there are sideways type bottles, they never really took off in a big way, I think because most people felt they were unnecessary and hard to clean.

In that photo above, as the milk gets low, and the bottle rocks, it seems to me every other gulp or so ends up being air. If the bottle teat was on the side, it seems to me it wouldn't.

I'm not a "lot", but I have never once in my life seen a baby lying flat on his/her back being fed by a vertical bottle. So I judge any claim that that's how it has to happen as incorrect no matter how many pictures explaining basic physics someone kindly offers to draw; not sure if that makes me judgy in general. But then I'm also not sure what the 90s have to do with anything, so clearly I'm just a mass of uncertainty this evening.

I feed my baby with the bottle rested against my boob and baby facing me, similar position to if they were breast feeding but latched to bottle not nipple, don't have problems with him sucking air. I am also someone who had never seen a baby bottle fed laid flat

It doesn't end up with air unless you don't watch what you are doing and you don't need to lie the baby flat either.
