can anyone reassure me about my big baby

I have a nearly 12 week old ds. he is absolutely enormous - off the chart in height and weight. he looks v chubby and has a big belly. he weighs over 20lb now, was over 10 at birth.

he is exclusively bf. is v happy, smiley, giggles, good head control. doesnt roll yet.

I guess I am just worried there is a problem. all I hear are comments about his size. hv just seems obsessed with charts abd the fact he isnt on them.

anyone else had this? just want to be reassured he is ok

I'm sure it's ok, my DS was over 10lb born and a massive baby, he looked like a bouncer...he is now a very average sized 7 year old. It all evens out eventually, especially when they start moving about. Please don't worry, although I know that's easier said than done! Enjoy your lovely chunky baby

Is your family or his dad's family particularly tall? Just keep getting him weighed monthly and keep an eye on it. You can't overfeed a breastfed baby, and I'm sure he will slow down in weight gain soon. The first few months are the fastest time for growth.

Whist does your HV actually say? Is she concerned enough to ask you to see a GP/paediatrician?

It's a good sign if he's big in both weight and height too. I wouldn't worry but do keep getting him checked.

not really. his brother is super tall but has never been chubby. I just worrying if giant baby could be a symptom of something else.

hv hasnt really said anything. just as you all say to keep weighing him

I think if she thought there was an underlying issue she'd tell you to take it further with GP or Paed'n. Given she hasn't I'm sure he's fine.

One of the baby boys in my nct group was just like that, completely off the scales - he too was exclusively bf. He is now nearly 6 and still very tall, but def not overweight!

thing is he isnt a demanding feeder. 1 or 2 night feeds, reasonably spaced on day, feeds take 20 mins. totally opposite to his smaller brothers who were attached all day and night!

DD was the same. Off the charts for weight and slowly creeping up for height from 50th centile at birth to 97th. Her doctor kept bringing it up but would agree that you cannot diet a baby (she was ebf to 6mo and the slowly introduced to healthy, home cooked solids), and could not suggest any exams we should be doing for potential health problems. All the doctor did was freak me out about it until I changed doctors!

DD is now 3yo, 97th for height but has now crept down for weight to 60th percentile. I think the weight gain was fueling the height. She will clearly be a very tall child/adult but her weight seems very good for now and she eats very healthily.

It sounds like he is taking loads of the rich hind milk and growing fast.

DS got very chubby, although not off the scale, between 6 and 12 months, but he is now a very healthy weight and an active 9 year old.

I had a ten pound baby who has continued to be big but at 3 years od he is big but not fat. just tall and solid but I can make out his ribs so not fat. He was breastfeed til six months when we introduced food then has continued to breastfeed

My baby was on 4th centile at birth (2 weeks early) then crept up the centiles until she reached the top of the chart! She was about 24 pounds at six months. I faced constant eyebrow raises etc at clinics until I eventually stopped going.

She is now 11 months old and very very active and her weight gain has slowed right down and she now weighs 25lbs so still big, but not much change in 5 months.

As pp said, there's nothing you can do but continue bf on demand. As he becomes active, his weight will stabilise!

Both mine were over 10lb babies. DS was always 99 for weight and height and now at nearly 13 is very tall but has slimmed down such a lot. DD had I diagnosed reflux so although she started off large she got very skinny as a toddler. Now though she is also heading for a growth spurt and is tall for her age although she doesn't look it cos of her giant brother!
I think it's good to have a baby with 'reserves'. All it takes is a period of illness to really knock them back so I wouldn't worry too much if he's happy and feeding well. Once he starts moving around I'm sure things will even out. Just watch your back lifting him!!

DS lost a lot of weight when he entered pre-school as he had D&V that seemed to last forever, and he never really recovered it.
Every illness seems to have taken weight off him.

My dd sounds like your ds.

Over 10lb at birth, think she was about 14-15lb at the six week check then bang on 2st on her first bitthday.

She's now 18 month though and I don't think she has put on a oz in 6 months. She never stops though so must just be ready to even out.

How I made it through her first year without punching some people over their constant comments is a mystery though
