Have to give up because of anti-d's

I've been happily bfing DS for 9 weeks, but have been prescribed 50 mg Sertraline today. I was ebf and am just looking for tips to switch over to formula without distress for him.

Hate the idea of giving up, but am happy to follow GP's advice on this.

Ring the drugs in breast milk helpline. There are very few drugs you can't bf while taking.

Gps have general knowledge and so not always give the best advice for breastfeeding.

Setraline is usually prescribed to breastfeeding mothers because it's ok to breastfeed on. Do you actually want to stop?

I don't really, but my GP and pharmacist both said it's contraindicated.

Maybe I'll mix and feed baby one or two feeds just before tablet time

When I got pregnant, my gp switched me onto sertraline because it's one of the anti ds that's safe for breastfeeding. I'm on 50mg too and breastfeeding with no comments from health professionals so think it's ok.

It's pretty shocking how many GPs and pharmacists don't properly understand the safety of various things in relation to breastfeeding. I have a number of friends who are breastfeeding on Sertraline.

The lady who runs the Drugs in Breastmilk helpline is a pharmacist and an expert in this area. Speak to her before making any big decisions.

I fed 3 dc for 12,15 and 25 months, on up to 200mg sertraline a day. I took it right through my 2nd and 3rd pregnancies too. My GP, pharmacist and psychiatrist all said it was fine - and my 14, 12 and 10 year old dc have only been affected in that they had a not-depressed mum!

Sertraline is an ok one i think. I took Paroxetine (AKA Seroxat) whilst breastfeeding.

DH is very pro- GP as well. He is saying well 9 weeks is a great start. His agenda is that I should do what the doctor says and get better. Which is hard to argue with, really!

All the way through this conversation I have been very very confused as to what you all were talking about, I thought you meant anti d's as in the injections I have to get because my blood type is rhesus negative so cant mix with babies without trying to fight the baby. Senior moment on my behalf - just thought I would give you all a bit of a laugh at my behest.

7Days my dh is a GP and was very happy with me taking sertraline!

I exclusively breastfed DS while on 50mg of sertraline per day, he was absolutely fine and my GP prescribed this because I wanted to keep bf, so in my experience, it is fine to keep exclusively breastfeeding.

7Days, you can at least get a second opinion, yes? What this doc has told you is way out of step with current good practice.

I bf for over a year on 50mg sertraline. It really is ok- my GP knew I was bfing and double-checked it, and I did some internet checking myself as well.

I'm breastfeeding my 6 month old and I'm on anti - depressants. Not sertraline though.

Only give up if YOU want to, not your GP or your DH.

It's not contra indicated, it's just that they (obviously)can't test them on bf mothers. However the side effects will be well monitored and it is commonly regarded as the safest ad for bf. don't stop bf if you don't want to and you can still take the ad, keeping you and oh happy.
