Mixed fed baby struggling to poo

Sorry for the subject line everyone! Wondered if any of you could offer advice.

My LO is 5 weeks old and is bottle fed mainly expressed breast milk with a top up of 2 bottles of formula a day (she has been breastfed then fed with expressed breast milk and formula since birth - long story). She was very small at birth but has been thriving and is now over two pounds above her birth weight.

Over the last few days her dirty nappies have dramatically decreased - she is now pooing once a day, sometimes once every two days - epic in nature! I know this is normal round about this age, but she seems to be in some discomfort and spends a lot of time 'straining' to produce wind. It's as if she needs to have a poo and can't. When they come they are runny and yellow as normal. She isn't upset - no crying - and is feeding as normal, but she does seem to be in discomfort because of it. Occasionally she seems to get a little pain in her tummy which makes her squeak (best way I can describe the noise).

So, have any of you experienced this? Is it normal or is there something I can do to help her? Many thanks!

My DS was like this at this age. My HV said it's just their little guts developing. He seemed to grow out of it after a couple of weeks. Try a warm bath and cycling her legs to give her a hand-baby massage was good too.

Thanks Nicky.

Mumsnet magic - she has just had two in two hours. Hopefully she's getting over it now.
