Weaning and breastfeeding - blocked ducts!!

I'm weaning my 6 month old, we are still BF though. I had not thought he was eating enough to reduce the BF until today, when I woke up with a really sore boob. It's most likely a blocked duct. I know how to deal with it completely as I have been very susceptible to them in the past. In fact I had to stop breastfeeding on my other side as I had an abscess that severely damaged the tissue to the point I needed surgery :(

What I'd like to know is ways people avoid this when they are starting to slow down on the BF. I'm abroad visiting family for another 2 months so I don't really want to go to the doctors (although I can if it is needed).

Has anyone else had problems with engorgement when their baby moves onto solids? How did you cope?
