what steriliser is it? My tommee tippee steam one just didn't turn on, or turned off within seconds if there wasn't water in it. So no damage done.

Might burn the steriliser out. Can you smell electrics?

Nothing smells weird. Dh said he thought the teats felt 'tough' but I thought they were same as usual.

It's a Dr Browns microwave steam steriliser, sorry should have said.

I've done this before. My partner never empties the water just adds more and more so I empty it and let it dry out, then he'll come along and bung it in the microwave! No harm done, though obviously not ideal. They came out fine, the bottles were freshly washed though so weren't completely dry.
