9 week old - am i feeding him too much formula?

My DS has just turned 9 weeks. He has about 5.5 or 6 oz every 3 hours. The Aptamil box suggests that at his age a suitable amount is 6 oz with 5 feeds in 24 hours. DS has 6 feeds in 24 hours. My MIL has said this is too much and that i should try to space the feeds out longer than 3 hours but i can't! The longest he can manage is about 3 hours 15 mins between feeds. He was 7 lb 4 oz at birth and was weighed a couple of weeks ago and was 11 lb. he is only on 25th centile. Am i overfeeding him? Any advice welcome!

I'd say keep doing what you are now feeds wise, iirc the box gives a guide. If your DS is on the 25th centile then there's no way you're overfeeding him.

Thanks, that's what i thought but MIL made me doubt myself! She said i should make him go 4 hours between feeds but why would i make him wait when he's hungry?! First baby so i thought i should check what others views were.

If he's hungry then feed him. If he wasn't hungry he wouldn't drink the formula so I don't see how you could over feed him.

One extra bottle a day isn't over feeding, if he's hungry for it.

Presumably MIL had her babies during the "four hours and no sooner" era?

Congratulations on your new baby!

what everyone else said. I used to give DS 6 bottles per day, and 7 at the height of his milk drinking just before weaning. If he wasn't hungry, he wouldn't eat/drink (still doesn't, how do I acquire this skill?!).

Your MIL doesn't have the listen to a hungry baby crying for food, which is actual torture. Smile, thank her for her advice, and ignore it!

I do think it's possible for ff babies to sometimes keep eating even when they're not hungry, but if your baby is on the 25th centile then I certainly don't think you're overfeeding him - trust your instincts and try not to feel too much pressure from your MIL. She's probably well-meaning but misguided!

DS always used to have over and above the recommendations on the tub and was always quite skinny! A 4 hourly gap between feeds is nice, but if they're hungry they're hungry!

Thanks all! I will continue as i am. And yes MIL dud have her babies in the 4 hours and no sooner era!
