Ideas on how to give breastfed newborn medication

Asking this for a good friend who is not on here to tap into the hive mind! Apologies if this has been brought up before, tried several searches and nothing pertinent popped up.

So, one month old baby girl, has reflux. Exclusively breastfed and gaining weight fine. This is my friends third baby and all were BF. However, this is her first with reflux.

She has no idea how to give medication to her. As I don' really know the details of doctors convos, etc, really just looking for info on giving bf newborns meds and not really on reflux itself. She's tried the putting it on the nipple thing and the little one was NOT IMPRESSED apparently!

I remember seeing a breast nipple guard attachment somewhere with a tube and stuff? Or maybe it was just a nightmare one time! Hahah... hah...

Any advice appreciated :)

If it's medication in a liquid form, then put it in a syringe and squirt into the cheek.
Does the baby really need medication? it could be that the let-down reflex is too strong. It changes from baby to baby. Has your friend noticed a difference?

What is the medication? My friend's DS had reflus and she had baby gaviscon to give him; it involved expressing milk, mixing the gavison with the milk and then either spooning or syringing it into him, before she fed it.

It was obvious that the medication would be so much easier if the baby had been bottled fed, but he was a happy puker so she gave up on the gaviscon in the end.

Syringe and cheek is best. Reflux is horrid, she and baby have my sympathy.

DC2 was on oral antibiotics from birth.

Syringe, squirt it in, offer breast immediately to wash away any unwanted flavour. He got used to it quickly.

I suggested a syringe to her as well but just didn't know if there were other techniques I wasn't aware of! Not sure what medication it is but I'm assuming it's liquid as they aren't really going to get a newborn to swallow a pill? Thanks for the tips ladies, I appreciate it!

DD has reflux and is ebf. I use the Calpol syringe or a spoon. She's 14 weeks and has had Gaviscon for a month or so.

I also mix it with less water than they say. It's easier to get into her that way, and over sooner.

6 week old ds2 has reflux and is on gaviscon. I use a cal pol syringe. Not ideal but it works and he's happy enough to take it that way.

Yes, syringe. Ds was ebf, but got many ear infections with v. high fevers so had to have antibiotics multiple times as a newborn. We always gave it to him in a syringe, letting him suck on and play with the syringe. The great thing about a syringe is that it doesn't spill if knocked by wriggling babies. You could start by giving him the breast milk or water in the syringe so he gets used to it and then put in the medicine.

Just had to give my ebf ds medication and used a cal pol syringe squirting into the cheek. Even if half gets spat out at least half will get swallowed!

Syringe here too although my son did drink the solution from a bottle for a day or two before refusing again.
