Ouch - red hole appeared in my nipple! Help please!

My DD is 7 months old and very fortunately I've had painfree success breastfeeding so far... until this weekend when what I can only describe as a small, red hole has appeared at the base of my nipple, ouch! Has anyone had anything similar? It weeps a little but my breastmilk isn't infected and I am still managing to feed Little One and she doesn't seem to care at all. And no ducts look particularly blocked...

Please tell me it will go away - I have just been to the GP who sadly wasn't much use and couldn't tell me what it was. She has given me a topical lotion to apply to the area and told me to express only from that side until it goes away?!! I don't think it is a plugged duct or blister but I am no expert... I was just wondering if anyone had experienced anything similar? Do I just need to grit my teeth, keep it clean and apply lots of lansinoh (which is what I am currently doing!).

Thank you in advance!

This happened to me when dd4 was 12 months, I think it was a tooth indent from a lazy latch. I went back to the early day breastfeeding basics and made sure she took a full mouthful when breastfeeding. It disappeared. Could it be that your dc is just latching on incorrectly?

Yes that could be the case as we have perhaps both got a little lazy. I will make sure she is - we are still waiting for teeth...
