Hi all, my baby is 2 days old, iv been feeding him jyst formular, but now iv decided to try him on the breast and do both.
iv just fed him his usual 2-3 oz of formula, and he wanted topping up half an hour later, so I tried him on the breast, dont think there was much coming out for him but he seemed to really like it.
Is this ok??
Im also worried that il just start to get my milk in for him and il have to give up due to the pain, as this was the case with my last baby xx

Of course it's ok. To stimulate the milk, put him as much as you can on the breast. Even when not hungry.
What pain are you talking about? Hard breast? In that case if you keep him latched, the pressure will fade more quickly. Nipple? Maybe he doesn't latch in a proper way. And keep your breast uncovered if you can. Lanolin helps for sore nipples.
Congratulations for your baby boy!

Absolutely give it a go and get as much support as possible. The more he is on the breast the better. It's goodness and comfort all in one.

Lots of skin to skin and let him latch in and off as he likes. You can't over feed a breastfeeding baby so follow his led.

Thankyou for replies :)
The soreness I had last time was very sore bleeding, raw nipples. It was almost impossible to comfortably latch on and feed, especially with 2 other young children. I was toId he was latching on fine.

This time round I dnt know weva its going to be the same, as im doing formula feeds aswell as.
Im definatly going to try that lanolin.. do I buy it over counter? Xx thanks again.

You can get Lanolin in the chemists or in some supermarkets- it's a bit more expensive than other brands but it really does seem to be the best.

Good luck with the breastfeeding, and don't worry if there doesn't seem to be much milk coming out- newborns only have a tiny appetite, and your supply will increase the more your baby feeds.

Congratulations! Thanks

Air drying nipples and paracetamol also help. Hope it goes well Smile

I second air drying nipples.
Lanolin will keep your nipples soft, so they don't get dry hence less likely to crackle and bleed (poor you).

If you have bleeding nipples then shields might help. Put the lansinoh religiously after every feed. Try biological nurturing to get a deeper more comfortable latch. If you Google it you'll find a video.

Good luck!

a 2 day old drinking 3 ounces? my almost 1yr old drinks 4 ounces and he is 24lbs. you are over feeding. they will take whatever you give them. to do both you need to reduce the amount of formula per feeding or you supply wont keep up.
