Can you top up collected milk?

I leak so much from the other breast when I feed my dd in the mornings that I decided to collect it in a breastshell and collected almost 2ozs.

Could I pop that in the fridge and continue collecting through the day and adding the collected milk into the bottle in the fridge? I would just do it that day and maybe use it that evening to help my dd go longer in the night?

I swear I heard you can do this but it does tell you now to do it on the back of the breast shells box.

Anyone else do this?

I never had enough to do it,but many can and do.

popsycal · 24/07/2006 21:03

i did it - but it is a bit of a pain in the arse.

I still could do it now 17 months on!

don't be fooled that it woul dhelp him go longer at night though - but yes - definitely can do it

I collected it but i initially put it in a separate container then added it to the clooection when it was cold. Didn't want to keep mixing warm with cold in the freezer. I froze it in batches of 4oz and 6 oz. I froze whatever I collected once the first milk collected was 48 hours old.

she feeds 7pm, wake her at 11pm and then her next feed is 8am but she wakes at 5ish every morning and moans a bit until i stick a dummy in - would like to get her to stop waking, dont think its hunger as that is a more persistant cry, she is 1o weeks old

i add bits to mine in freezer - have done with 5 babies no problems at all!

so its ok for me to pop a sterilised breast shell on the other breast, pour that collected milk into a sterilised bottle, store in fridge, put the shell on again at the next feed and then add that into the bottle in the fridge and so on for feeds that day?

keep the just collected milk in a different bottle inthe fridge until it is cooled to the same temp as the collecting bottle inthe fridge..then add it to it

mears · 24/07/2006 22:45

yes it is. Do you offerher the other breast? I switched the shell to the other side and collected from it as well, even though I had fed from it. Just make sure milk is cold when you add it to as popsycal has described. I have to say lovecloud, at 10 weeks I would feed her at 5am. 9 hours is long enough between feeds at that age if she is wakening

Yes, you can do that and you can also add chilled EBM to frozen.

quootiepie · 24/07/2006 22:55

just remembered you can - just it has to be used within 24 (or 48 hours depending on source) of the first lot being chilled.

hunkermunker · 24/07/2006 23:06

You can use EBM that's been in the fridge for up to eight days, as long as it's kept at the back, preferably on the bottom shelf (not in the door).
