7 weeks old & feeding still takes a long time

Hi,

My LO is 7 weeks old & I am breast feeding. He feeds for around 40mins - hour. This seems a long time for his age & not sure why. I don't think he is suckling for comfort.
Feeds are generally 3-4 hours & I offer both breasts if he is hungry.

Does this seem right to feed for this long at this age?

Seems perfectly normal to me. I know ff babies who take this long too Xmas Smile

This is not a long time - what have you heard or read that makes you think it is?

Many, many babies of this age and older may take this length of time. There is stopping and starting sometimes - normal.

Hey,

It's talking to other mums with babies of same age feed between 10-20 mins. LO feeds every 3 hours & the nights are getting to me & I am starting to flag. I just wanted to see if there was a problem or not.

cookie - I think you have some pals who are not that great at reading the clock :) :)

10-20 minutes at 7 weeks is an unusually short time, I would say - it's also perfectly normal, of course.

Feeding 3 hourly is very normal.

Is there a way of making night feeds easier for you? Safe co-sleeping?

Sorry, this was normal for me. It does get shorter and less often though, but 7 weeks is very early days, hold in the there! Make sure your day takes into account all this feeding time but still try and get out and about once a day (just a short walk or a cuppa with a friend). It'll break up the monotony and you'll feel better.

Consider yourself lucky. I've got a slacker who likes to feed for 10 mins max and then wants more food and hour or two later! I would rather give a forty mins feed every 3 to 4 hours!

Normal.

I know it doesn't seem like it now, but there will soon come a time when you will miss the chance to put your feet up and MN. When he will roll off after a couple of minutes and start wrecking the house again. 11 mo here :)

My baby is 6 weeks and takes this long too. Sometimes longer, sometimes shorter. To get through the nights I'm co sleeping and have my iPad on hand to read etc. During the day I put my feet up and catchup with some TV. I am rather enjoying it for now.

Normal! It gets quicker. Mine takes 5 mins per side now.
