You can get good information on this by reading what the Breastfeeding Network say - google breastfeeding network alcohol for the pdf.

Locketjuice · 14/11/2013 10:37

Well what your consuming your baby is too. So no.

Ruralninja · 14/11/2013 10:48

in moderation is ok - but you just need to be clear what that is

tiktok · 14/11/2013 10:57

Locket, not correct....in fact, far from correct.

Check facts before sounding so dogmatic!

squidkid · 14/11/2013 11:01

Yes it's fine. Your blood alcohol level when DRUNK (i.e. the drink driving limit) is about 0.08. The level in milk is the same as in the blood. So it would be like the baby drinking a 0.08% alcoholic drink. That is about as alcoholic as lemonade.

Obviously you have to be sober enough to safely look after a baby. Co-sleeping isn't safe if you've been drinking. More than a moderate amount of alcohol (14 units a week) is bad for your own health, etc etc.

Dr. Jack Newman, member of the LLLI Health Advisory Council, says this in his handout "More Breastfeeding Myths":

"Reasonable alcohol intake should not be discouraged at all. As is the case with most drugs, very little alcohol comes out in the milk. The mother can take some alcohol and continue breastfeeding as she normally does. Prohibiting alcohol is another way we make life unnecessarily restrictive for nursing mothers."

Locket based on that logic, better not have anything with a stock cube in then...

squidkid · 14/11/2013 11:03

This link seems fairly accurate.

SO much disinformation around about this topic. I dutifully expressed last christmas so I could have some champagne. I will be far more relaxed with next baby! I currently drink whatever I want and breastfeed my 13 month old (I don't like getting drunk anyway).

squidkid · 14/11/2013 11:07

This topic really bothers me, not because I want to drink (though I do enjoy a glass of wine), but because it's another way in which breastfeeding is made out to be so hard and martyr-ish.

tiktok · 14/11/2013 11:57

I agree, squid.

Look how quickly someone well-meaning but totally misinformed came onto the thread to tell the OP 'no'.

It's just judgmental and bossy :(

Anyfuckerisnotguilty · 15/11/2013 12:11

Oh thanks I can have a couple of glasses of wine at Christmas then

Yay
