reflux - sma staydown/omneo comfort

My ds (2months ) has always brought up mild after most feeds. Anyone used sma staydown or omneo comfort to help with this? Did it work. Doctor has suggested "thickener" for feeds - anyone know what's in this and does it work? Do you just add it to the bottle?

We used a thickener in ebm and then formula. It is like cornflour but easier to dissolve in cold milk and more digestible. Ours was Thick and Easy which is apparently also used in SCBU's for prem babies. You need to use a large holed or variable flow teat or it gets clogged !

Hi chopstick

IMO I don't think the Omneo comfort will help. Haven't ever used SMA stay down, so can't comment on it.

Has your ds been prescribed any reflux medication?

Thickening formula doesn't work in all causes. Mine were both prescribed ranitidine (zantac) to reduce the production of acid in the stomach.

An alternative to the Thick and Easy is Carobel by Cow & Gate, works the same way. Both are available on prescription. You can play around with the qty you add until you find the correct thickeness for your lo.

However, I think if you going down the thickening route, I would go for gaviscon because not only does it thicken the formula, it is also an antacid.

take care

hi, omneo comfort didnt doing anything to stop my ds from being sick 24/7 - he was gaining weight steadily so we just waited for him to outgrow it. fortunately, things started to settle down a little when he weaned and he is fine now most of the time. omneo has been great for him but largely because had problems with aptamil etc and it was recommended for a sensitive stomach as it is partially pre-digestived or something like that so is easier for them to cope with.
