Hi,
We have an 8 week old wth silent reflux, she was given gaviscon about 10 days ago, but weve only been managing to get 2 doses a day into her as she wont take a bottle so ive been using a syringe into the corner of her cheek as advised but she keeps gagging, even when im dripping it really slowly, last night she was awake so, much, she kept gagging when i breastfed her and waking up choking coughing and gasping then crying. And had hiccups about 5 times. Ive spent the night crying thinking shes going to choke.
Ive got her crib propped up, and my husband did give her her first bottle about 3weeks ago and she drank it straight down, but since then she either gags on it or plays with it in her mouth but dosnt suck.
I am keeping her as upright as i can but she seems to be getting worse.
Have also started cranial osteopathy.
Please can anyone give me any advice on getting her to take a bottle and the reflux.
In between all these episodes shes such a happy baby, this is breaking my heart.

I'm still experimenting, but was advised to mix the Gaviscon with milk instead of water, 2.5 week old son agrees the milk mix is more palatable as spits the water mix out or gags on it. Also, have found putting the syringe into as mouth as he is breastfeeding, next to my nipple and gently squeezing the mixture in as he sucks is reasonably successful.
Also advised to give the Gaviscon in small doses at every feed instead of every four hours.
my approach isn't full proof but I have seen some improvement and hope to get better!
Good luck

DS has reflux so I do have a few ideas but feel free to discard them if they don't work for you!

RE the gaviscon, could you try giving it via a supplemental nursing system? www.medelabreastfeedingus.com/products/51/supplemental-nursing-system-sns This would allow your baby to swallow gaviscon and breastmilk at the same time.

For us gaviscon did not work and DS ended up on omeprazole, it may work for you of course but don't be afraid to ask your Dr about other medications if you feel you have given the gaviscon a good try and it is not working.

A good hands free option for keeping her upright is a wrap like the hug a bub, moby wrap, close baby carrier etc that allow you to have her upright against your chest, can be a lifesaver with a reflux baby.

Good luck and hang in there!
