10 month old has favourite side, can other dry up?

This may be a silly, but can one side dry up while the other produces milk? My DS is 10months old and tends to favour my left side for feeding. The problem is the right side is now much smaller than left, and he tends to tug and bite at my nipple on that side like he isn't getting anything from it. (he has 2 teeth now too, ouch)

My - that sounds uncomfortable! Afraid I don't have any profound advice, my dd had a phase of only feeding off one side (left, funnily enough). I phoned the NCT bf counselling line, they said that was fine and one side could produce enough milk so wasn't a problem but advised that I expressed enough to keep the unused side soft.

ditto ProfYaffle's comments. Same happened to me and I was given the advice by someone on here but I can't remember the mumsnetter's name.

by the time I stopped feeding DS2 (about 13m) he was only feeding from one side anyway.
I was told that you could feed from just one side all the time. (you do have lopsided boobs though so maybe expressing might be a good idea if you care about things like that - I didn't!)

I am glad it's not just me then. Thanks! It's nice to know that other babies have favourite sides too.

If you never feed from one side it will eventually stop producing milk. Some babies favour one side but still feed from both, so both will produce milk. Depends how you feel about it.

I want to incourage him to feed from both sides. I hate having a lobsided chest... and if he is going to be so picky at this age it doesn't bode well for the future

I will still try & feed him from both sides and see how it goes.

Can you give him the one he's not keen on when he's too sleepy to know?

my dd 5m is already prefering my right boob. i try to start off with the left when i know she's particularly hungry even if it's not that sides turn iykwim. she doesn't seem to mind that. the preference shows itself more when she's comfort sucking i think. sympathies on lopsided boobs tho - they look weird don't they?!

I had a bad bout of mastitis and lost my milk on one side. Despute my gp telling me I couldn't feed from one side only I continued fine. I carried on putting her to both sides, but she prefered the one with lots of milk, so I carried on lopsided.

I did try to give him the side he doesn't like when he's tired and that does seem to work. Thank you!!

Hi,

have you tried lying down to feed on the other side. My bub prefers to lay down for the right boob & sit up for the left

I fed dd2 for 2 yrs and 18 mo of that was on one side only, and the side she didn't like did dry up. In the end she forgot how to feed on that side altogether. For a while I looked like I had a watermelon and a grapefruit up my top but once she cut back on her feeds it did even up a bit. The downside is that now I'm no longer bf I have one relatively normal boob and one that is heading for my knees that looks like a deflated balloon.
