whenver i had it(a lot!) i felt shivery, fluey, had a temperature, sore breast with lots of red lines zigzagging around it, generally felt like crap.

alexsmum · 22/06/2006 10:13

do you think you have it? if so get thee to a doc and get some anti-biotics.they are great and make you feel better within hours.

Kelly1978 · 22/06/2006 10:13

bad fever, feelign fluish, very tired, and hot/very sore patches on breast. Are you unwell?

Jasnem · 22/06/2006 10:14

flu like symptoms, pain in the breast, red hard lump inthe affected breast. Do a search on here there are loads of threads about it.
If it sounds like you, you need to see a dr as early treatment is vital.

I feel achey, cold-like, shivery and breasts are a little tender atm. I sometimes get these symptoms when i'm run down and tired (obviously not the tender breasts!!)- no sore red patches or anything like that though. Worth a visit to the dr? Am seeing HV later to get ds weighed so would i be better off just mentioning it to her?

I would see the dr, hv won't have a clue

You get a very specific localised pain in one boob, with the inflamed area become steadily larger and more tender. The aches and shivers are secondary to the agonising pain in the boob.

I didn't have a red patch particularly (had 5 or 6 bouts of mastitis with dd2) but definitely localised pain starting as tenderness and mutating rapidly into agony.

Generalised soreness in both breasts doesn't sound like mastitis, tbh. There is a nasty sore-throaty fluey bug going round atm.

thanks all - will go and get it checked out just to be on the safe sideX

go and get it checked by the doc just in case.don't take any chances.the hv will be rubbish

Kelly1978 · 22/06/2006 10:22

my hv diagnosed me, and sent me straight to the gp for abs the first time I had it, with dd. The second time I had it was with my dts, when I ended up in bed with them feeling like crap and jsut fed through it. I don't like taking ABs and managed without them. Frequent feeding is an absolute must though, and cold compresses might help. Or sit in a bath and massage your breasts and any lump that might be there.

controlfreaky · 22/06/2006 10:24

i had it a few times but not really badly. didnt want to take antibiotics unlesss absolutely necessary. you can zap in early stages with homeopathy if you're lucky / believe in such things. it worked for me. if really bad you need to get serious with the real drugs....

bundle · 22/06/2006 10:25

sometimes the red patches don't appear till v late. get a prescription for flucloxacillin, to use if your symptoms worsen (ie temp goes up to say 39, 40 and stays there) or redness appears and gets bigger. i've had it a few times and you need the ab's quickly if it happens imo.
