What to expect from periods post breastfeeding?

Just wondering how others found their cycle to be when they gave up breastfeeding?
I had my first period around 5 weeks ago (as I was in the process of stopping feeding dd who is now 13m). Should I expect them to be fairly regular or completey erratic for a while yet?

I had a period 4 weeks after stopping bf which only lasted 2 days. Then I had another about 8weeks later so am a bit erratic at the mo. Oh and they seem to be much heavier than normal.

I had a 'phantom' period first - all the symptoms but no bleeding. First period after that was 28 days later, second one was 29 days later, and I was obviously fertile because now I'm pg. So for me they were bang on regular. Not sure how they would have been if they kept going, the first 2 might have been flukes.

mine came back as regular as they'd every been, but my cycle was a day shorter than pre DS. I'm pg again now so will have to stop at 21 kids if I don't want perma-period.

Mine came back as regular as clockwork ... something they had never, ever been before. I have gone from having 1, maybe 2 periods a year to having one bang on every 28 days - can't say I'm very impressed! They were also very, very heavy when they came back, which has improved a little but not much.

Got mine back when dd was 8 months (still bf) gone back to completely regular and they did with ds as well. Got pregnant very easily second time round!

suzi2: I had a sort of 'phantom' period this last weekend too. I was really expecting it to start, but nothing.

I'm still breastfeeding quite a lot (an 8month old).

foundintranslation · 21/06/2006 16:38

Ds is 13mo and still bf, at night as well - but I have had regular periods since he was 6 mo.

bobblehead · 21/06/2006 16:51

Hmmmm, well I'm on cd35 and def not pregnant so not looking to hopeful on the back to regularity front. Really need to book appointment for smear test though, which would be sure to bring it on!

got my period back when DD was 8mths old - i was gutted because was still BFing quite a bit and had thought that the payoff for that was no period!
My gynocologist had said the 1st period after pregnancy can be really heavy, but i didn't find that at all, and they are pretty regular, mainly every 24 days, occasionally 27 or 28 days apart.

popsycal · 21/06/2006 17:55

ds2 is almost 16 months and still none for me!

pianomummy · 21/06/2006 18:29

i've had them v regular since ds was about 4 months but was (and still am) breastfeeding! only twice a day now. i read somewhere else on MN that once it's more than 5 hours between feeds bfding no longer affects your cycle. hope so as trying for no 2 at mo, but still bfeeding. my ds's godmother got pg while still bfeeding, so i'm hoping it's the same for me!

Have been keeping off the site for a bit in order to be more productive in real life. I'm not here now really.

sunday, this last fathers day, was my last day of BF my 9 month old ds. he went straight to hipp follow up with zero problems. ((im grateful))

I was sooo not prepared to have a period so quickly! mine came (first time since oct 2005)only FOUR DAYS after stopping the bf's. Its been very very heavy so far. i'm using maternity pads! heheh.

can i ask those of you who have weaned off boobie for a little advice? ((this is my frist bebe so i really havent a clue))... since i've stopped bf, i do get full and leak as expected, but at the moment they full like they are engorged, but tey arent...hmm..kinda sore and tender/hard. should i be expressing?? or will this pass? what did you do to "get back to normal"?
