8m ds refusing breast; prob linked to teething- is this common? What if he doesn't go back on?

About 2 months ago he refused all daytime feeds because he was teething, this went on for about 5 or 6 days and then he went back to normal.

Today is day 7 of no feeds at all, will still wake once in the night, more upset than just looking for a feed, will refuse the breast, take a drink of water then go back to bed- with paracetamol if particularly unhappy.
He cut one tooth the week past last Sunday and one last Thursday. I keep offering him it but he just really doesn't want to try. The week before he gave up he had noticably cut down to probably just one day time feed, a bed time and one through the night, and if I offered in the day when he didn't want it he would not exactly bite me but kind of nibble so of course I would pull away quickly.

I'd like to know if this is common? As I said he did it before but for less time, do you think he might go back on? Should I keep offering?
Also, what do I do if he stops completely? I really don't want to start buying formula. How detrimental is it to not give formula? He's 8 and a half months old. How much benefit is there from formula as opposed to just an ordinary good, well balanced diet?

Also, I'm really really sad. He is my last baby and I'd planned on feeding him for a year like I did my other 2 dc.

Sad

Def a nursing strike, what have you tried to ease teething pain?

Look on kellymom for info on nursing strike.

Inn the ,meantime can you express and put milk in food or a sippy cup s he gets some milk?

I saw on Fb someone had made little ice Lillie's out of breast milk and was givimg them to her teething baby to soothe gums!

I have given him ashtons powders, bonjela (which just slides right off the gum Hmm) paracetamol, teethers, bickiepegs. Nothing seems to make much of a difference.
What a great idea about the lollies! I have some frozen bm cubes I could put it in one of those mesh feeder things- thanks! I'll continue to express, yes he has taken it in his cup before so I'll just have to stick with that I guess. Thanks, 5madthings Smile

Ds2 had a nursing strike a few weeks ago because of teething pain, he's older - 15mo - so I was worried he wouldn't go back to bf. I was surprised how upset I was, like you he's my last baby and I bf ds1 til he was 18mo and planned on bfing ds2 for the same or longer.

Nothing at all would get him to take the breast while he had the pain and he wouldn't take much expressed in a cup either but after 5 days of no bfs the pain must have suddenly stopped as he suddenly latched on (i'd been offering before the cup each time) and is back on it 2-3 times in the day (and 2-4 times at night which is not so welcome Grin)

So fingers crossed your ds does as well.
