been feeding 10 day old for 2 and a half hours

As the title says, she has been feeding since before 7pm. Every time i put her down she cries to go back on. How long does this last? I feel like i am constantly feeding and its totally draining me. I want to go to bed :(

Tell me about it. My 11 day old has done exactly the same. She's just gone sleep now. My nipples hurt! :-/

Oh gosh. Poor you. I remember it well. It doesn't last forever.

Have you got a kindle? You can read with one hand. Or maybe just let her sleep on you rather than in the cot. It's probably as much just wanting to be snugly with you as anything else.

Have you heard of cluster feeding? This is a fairly classic example of it. They're trying to boost your supply by putting in orders for more, plus they get lots of lovely happy, pain relieving, comforting hormones which make their transition to the outside world a little easier.

I know it seems horrific right now but it will ease off. I can highly recommend a book called Wonder Weeks which tells you when these cluster feeds are likely to occur in the future. I think it comes as an app too.

Keep up the good work and enjoy the enforced resting time. East cake and read books and cuddle your tiny baby x

It's normal and it passes - eventually. Could you not just take baby to bed with you? Co-sleeping saved my sanity, but then I had a double bed to myself so it was easier to make a little bed on top for mine.

Breastfeeding, is how I got into the xbox.

Ooh, I remember posting on here complaining that DD had been feeding for over four hours once!

I know it's not much consolation now, but it is just a phase and does pass.

To be honest i am scared i will fall asleep and drop her or something. I love her to bits and love the cuddles but i am tired and i dont even know how long she will sleep for before it all starts again. good to know i am not the only one though.
We got off to a rough start with a hospital admission for jaundice and dry nappies so she needed bottles for a day or so. I am proud of myself for still persevering and managing to bf so i am quite determined to not give in . i honestly dont know how she has the energy to feed for so long

If you are in danger of falling asleep and dropping her (or falling asleep on a sofa - really dangerous) I would urge you to make you bed safe and lie down to feed her there.

Oh bless her, bet shes loving being so close to you, my DD is 11 weeks & she did the same, she is now on my shoulder asleep, We are in bed

I remember this phase (and it is a phase). Get a big bottle of something to drink, lots of eat and nuzzle down. I watched every back episode of Greys Anatomy and Glee during this time. DD is now a big musicals fan!

Thanks everyone. I am sat on the edge of the couch so i wont fall asleep. She is feeding less and nodding off more so hopefully she will settle soon.

Really well done for getting this far with the bf in spite of everything.

I remember it well and it really honestly does only last a short time.

Enjoy the cuddles as all too soon she will be a squirmy toddler saying "geroff mummy!" and pushing you away.

He has a tongue tie too and I'm in so much pain. I hate this :(

Tie getting cut tomorrow thank god.

Is your DH there? If so, she might stay asleep while he holds her for a bit so you can get a good chunk of sleep in.

Hang in there. It will pass.

Oh and enjoy the snuggles. It really does go far too quickly. I still bf my ten month old dd 7,10,2,7 and about 2 -3 times over night. It's the only time she is either still enough or quiet enough to have a cuddle!

DS (4w tomorrow) was completely attached to the boob on day 10. Apparently it's a growth spurt that happens around that day. The day after he slept a lot. It's normal and it will pass!

you are doing well. take every day as it comes and like everyone says this cluster feeding will pass.

can remember the exhaustion esp with my 3rd and fourth baby. very intense time!

Oh I remember this too with both dc. It does pass and the only advice I can offer is the same as everyone else. Rest, feed yourself and your baby, sleep when you can. But try and get some lanolin cream/ointment for your nipples.

This happened me too.I didn't know what was going on.It was just before milk came in on second dd and she fed for...wait for it...8 hours.Couple of little breaks in between.I thought I was going to crack up.Never experienced thus with first dd .Rang the midwife and explained and she said oh yes that's cluster feeding and it will pass.Really felt like sending dp to the shop for formula but glad I persevered.Shes now two months old and a 'fine child'!I hope you have someone looking after you-plenty of drinks, snacks and lasinoh!

I had an evening cluster feeder for first 10 weeks she wanted food from 6-10 every night. I just learnt to enjoy tv and being cooked for :)

She did start sleeping from 10-5 at about five weeks possibly as she was so full of milk! So it can have its upsides.

The good news is that the long feed normally results in a long sleep. This will pass. Nipple cream with lanolin works well.

thanks again everyone, she fed till about 11 and then woke at 2 and then 6! So i suppose it was all worth it for a good sleep. I feel a lot better today for it.

I had weeks and weeks of cluster feeding. It is incredibly draining and I felt that it would never end. It did though and I am so glad I persevered. Breastfeeding is working out great for us - so easy and DS is thriving! Stick at it and it will get easier.
