13 week old screams in fear before feed and pain after. Help!

My 13week old ds is on omezeprale for reflux which does not seem to help and has paediatric appt Monday. He gets hungry but when I try to breastfeed he screams and appears terrified. He arches his back and throws his head about. If he does latch the feed is tiny and he omes off screaming in pain. the latch is often not good but I'd I try to reposition he screams and won't go on again. This repeats for hours. It is hell. I went to a breastfeeding clinic who said mt feeding position was good for reflux and did not know what to advise. I would like him to take a bottle as I think he would find this easier but he won't. Any advice? He has stopped gaining weight.

This sounds like my DS. It turned out he had multiple allergies. They were insisting it was reflux. Cutting out dairy helped massively, but then I started having soya which he was also allergic to .Have they considered alkergies?

You poor things, I remember how awful it was .
If you do cut out dairy etc make sure to be referred to a dietician.

I suspect paed will advise an elimination diet (ask for a dietician referral) or special formula.

Did the breastfeeding clinic mention trying the biological nursing position for breastfeeding? Have a google for images of the position - it might be worth a try to see if it helps your baby to be calm at the breast.

I agree with trying to cut out dairy. I did that with ds2 as he had reflux.
The gp didn't have a clue - thank goodness for mumsnet!
I cut out dairy and he was much better. He was allergic to dairy (vomiting, exzema)He is now 5 and is fine with cooked dairy now.

Try it and if theres no change after a few days, I'd go to the gp.

Thanks, sorry for delay replying: was dealing with screaming fit (his, not mine, though we are heading that way!). I am really hoping it s not dairy allergy as I am a veggie, so will be a very restricted diet. I do eat a lot of dairy at the moment : (
I have tried biological nursing but did not help. I think he associates feeding from me with pain. As soon as I put him on or near my lap he looks terrified and screams. It is awful. We have just tried feeding with bottle in dads lap. He couldn't suck but he at least he never rejected it and some dripped into his mouth at least.

I hope it isn't then but the only way to know is by elimination, should start to notice a difference within a few days if it is (can some weeks totally though as it has to leave your sYstem then theirs). Some babies can handle if you have small amounts or baked but you'd have to cut everything initially.

Which bottles are you using? A different type might be better. Really feel for you here, it sounds exactly like DS except by that point he wouldn't even go near my breast and ended up exactly the same on a bottle too.

My DS, 3 weeks old, was exactly the same. He was lactose intolerant. Doctors kept dismissing it was colic, which it couldn't be as he hadn't eaten and was screaming as soon as he saw the bottle. It took 6 doctors/nurses until I eventually got to see a paediatrician at the hospital. I had to insist to see a paediatrician with the last one, and when he called up the paediatrician, he basically told him that I was wasting everyone's time and as it was only colic - in front of me! As soon as I walked in, I fed my DS in front of the paediatrician, and he screamed instantly. A prescription of containing 4 things changed my DS entirely.

Anyway, don't take any shift from doctors. Get seen by a specialist. Maybe part of it is because I am a man, so obviously don't know what I am doing....

P.s he became much more tolerant of dairy once weened. He can now have ice cream, yoghurt and cream, as long as it is with a meal.

I realise it's hard, but eliminating dairy should be your first step - one of my friends had this with her second DC and eliminating dairy was a lifesaver. It's very hard if you're veggie, but you may just have to go vegan while you BF...

Allergies (especially cows milk protein) could well be the cause but tend to also cause other symptoms - rashes / skin reactions in particular.

It could still be reflux - my daughter was exactly the same: screaming even in anticipation of a feed. She ended up just the same with expressed milk too. If it was started by your GP the dose of omeprazole might not be high enough. But the paediatrician should be able to sort this and use a decent dose which might make the difference. She should also be on a pro-kinetic agent (eg domperidone) to increase her stomach emptying and prevent the reflux episodes.

On high dose omeprazole and domperidone she got better virtually overnight! It was incredible.

Either way, breast milk is far better for babies with reflux and/or allergies so if you can, then carry on. We are still breast feeding very happily at 9 months... At the time it was the hardest thing I've ever done.

Good luck with the paediatrician (and if you can film a feed on your iPad/whatever that can be really helpful).
