Help! What's happened to my milk?

Hi DD is 8m and bf has been going really well up to now. Started solids at 6m, but she's not really that keen so still mostly just playing with food (although some does come out the other end! Smile

Last 4-5 days I've been having a lot of trouble with my supply and also my milk let down. It's just suddenly gone!

I know I'm not letting down milk because

  1. I almost always feel the first let down
  2. DDs sucking pattern is just sucking, very little swallowing, I know the change when the milk starts flowing
  3. DD gets grumpy as there's no milk!

Mornings are not as bad, usually starts flowing after 2-3 mins, afternoons take longer but evening feeds have been a total disaster, no milk and very grumpy baby after 15-20 mins sucking (and also sore nipples Blush ).

I have tried relaxing, thinking of waterfalls, imagining the milk flowing through my breasts... I generally feed in the same chair (DD is too nosy to feed different places anymore), it feels like it's almost there but just not quite!

Supply also seems to have taken a nosedive, boobs suddenly very soft and wrinkly, not filling up much and DD seems 'finished' very quickly and demanding the other side, and then the first again.

DD's weight gain has also stalled the past month or so.

Any ideas??? TIA

Hmm, it's pretty normal for milk to start to be made more on demand, as your child gets older.

But this sounds quite sudden.

Has anything else changed in your life? Have you started on the pill, or gone on any other medication? Are you still feeding on demand? Are you feeding at night? Any chance you may be pregnant?

It could be just the letdown being 'shy', but you're already doing what I would recommend to help with that ...

I agree this is odd....apart from the pregnancy suggestion (which is worth considering), are you about to start your period?

Sometimes there is a dip just before - temporary only.

Was going to suggest either pregnancy or just being about to get your period - I remember DS1 looking up at me very grumpily the day before my period when he was about 2 and saying "dis milk broken"....

Hi thanks so much for the replies Smile Things seem to be improving today and my period has also started (1st one!) so it looks like you lovely ladies were right. Grin Had a few very long attempts at evening feedings, and a rather grumpy baby, so I hope it's not quite so bad every month! I hadn't even considered that as a possibility Blush so nice to know there's a reason and it's not that my boobs went on strike!
Thanks for your advice
