No Interest in her Bottle ... will she starve ?!!!

cords · 27/01/2004 04:06

DD has just started having baby rice and some pear ... She was doing fine on bottle and the above for about a week but over the last two days, she has suddenly gone off her milk. Is this

a) OK ? For example she had
11pm : 4oz
7:30 :3oz
11:30 : 3oz and was not interested in her baby cereal.

b) Could she be ill or constipated ? (she did do a big poo this am after a day and a half without.

She seems also to really fuss when the bottle is given to her as well ... jsut when I though things were getting better as it has taken a couple of weeks for her to get into it after I stopped breastfeeding.

I just wanted reassurance that this does happen and that I need not panic that she is putting herself on a diet at almost 5 months !

Dismal night last night,dh attempted to feed dd her 8pm bottle. She screamed squirmed, spat it out, choked & finally after we had got 5oz down her, threw the whole lot up over herself.I have NEVER seen so much vomit from such a small child!

She sat & laughed after that, but refused any more milk,so I put her to bed & crept in with the bottle again at 10.30pm,she had 3oz.Consequently she was awake at 4.50am today, but would only take another 3oz.I am at the end of my tether with it at the minute.DH saw how wound up it got me & has voluntered to do all her feeds tomorrow.

EmmaKB,thanks for the tip about the GF book, our local library had a few copies recently, but they were all out today, but will try again.

Cords,I don't know what dd weighs as HV doesn't want to weigh her.She was born on her due date & weighed 7lb 14oz & so far has always been on the 50th percentile. She was last weighed at her 12wk check & she was 12lb 4oz.

Regarding the feeds,I make up a few 4oz ones & try to mix what she doesn't drink into her solids, but generally do end up chucking most of it away.Sometimes I get optomistic & make up a 6oz one.HA HA!!!

Good luck on your trip, perhaps different surroundings will make a difference.DD stunned me by drinking 2oz of water whilst we were out shopping today-she hasn't done that for months.

EmmaKB · 31/01/2004 16:23

Mirage,

I would't get stressed about it. Is she is really hungry then she will drink what she needs.

I give ds a bottle at 7am followed by some baby cereal and fruit, bottle at 11.15am followed by vegetables, a bottle at 2.30pm (this is usually a smaller feed (which is right if I go by the book), bottle followed by rice and fruit at 5.30-5.45 then a top up at 6.45. Bedtime at 7pm ish. He is now taking on average 3-4oz per feed but sometimes he can take as much as 5oz. He is a very sicky baby so he probably bring back at least half of his feed. Spoken th the HV about this but says he will grow out of it but I am not so sure as she has been saying this for the last 5 months. Have started to put him in a baby walker which seems to help by keeping him upright. Was sleeping through but this week has decided to start waking up during the night around 4am I don't think that he is hungry as he goes straight back to sleep but only in our bed.

Is she crying for a feed or are you feeding her when she does not appear to be hungry. Sometimes our routine goes to pot so I just feed when he seems hungry. I find that if his feeds are too close together he either totally refuses or only takes half an ounce.

I have been very optimistic making up 8oz bottles. What a fool I am, must be made of money. You never know the day I make a 4oz bottle he will drink the lot and cry for more.

Keep in tough and let me know how you are getting on.

mears · 31/01/2004 16:31

Mirage - out of interest, why do you offer milk at 4pm then solids at 4.30pm. Could you space her meals out. My babes had tea at 5.30pm. Could you offer milk only at meal times and have them at say 8-9am, milk and solids
1pm milk and solids
5pm then a drink before bed?

mears · 31/01/2004 17:18

Had to rush off there. I think I am saying the same as EmmaKB. If you feel that she isn't taking enough milk have you considered cutting the solids back. Is that when the problem started?

Mirage · 31/01/2004 20:45

Hi again,

EmmaKB,she rarely,if ever cries for a feed.Never seems to get really hungry. Before she started on solids she was on a 4 hour routine.I am currently following a routine devised by my H.V,but as you can tell,it isn't working.

Mears, thanks for your advice,I was doing what the HV suggested, but I don't have much faith. I would prefer her to have her tea later,as it would be closer to our old routine, but thought I'd better try what the HV said.I did try cutting out solids & she still refused her bottle & went for 7.5 hours before she would drink anything.

She has never been a good feeder & refused to breastfeed. The problem has been brewing for a long while, but got worse in the past 10 days or so.She was already going off her milk a while before weaning. We started weaning just before Christmas & she will eat anything put in front of her.I would be happy to go back to square one with solids if I thought it would work, but I am so worried about the length of time she will refuse to drink for-she seems to be able to last a long while on very little.

Thanks for all the suggestions,I think moving her mealtimes may help, even if she doesn't drink more, having solids a bit later may help her sleep a bit longer.

Mirage · 05/02/2004 12:24

Well my HV has just been.DD weighs 15lb 6 & a half oz,so she has put on over 3lb in 10 wks.So that is a big relief. She also looked at my food diary & told me that DD has a fab diet & she wished more mums fed their babies as well. She has dropped half a centile, but that is nothing to worry about as she is so active.

We are still battling with the milk intake, but we have had a few 5 oz bottles recently,so that is an improvement.Next week she is 24wks,so can have cows milk on cereal ect,so maybe she will prefer that. Can't say I blame her re the formula-it does taste foul.

How are the other milk strikers doing?

EmmaKB · 06/02/2004 19:32

Hi Mirage,

Great to hear that her weight is ok. My ds is getting a little better too sometimes taking 5oz. Although he has cut right back on his mid afternoon feed to 1-2oz. I am trying to feed him now and he isn't interested. His weight seems to be ok aswell which I am surprised at considering he doesn't drink much an is sick all the time.

Hope everything goes OK for you

cords · 08/02/2004 13:25

dear all ... have just returned back from a week in Kuala Lumpur .

DD proved to be a champion milk striker for the first 5 days , averaging only 17-19oz or so each day. It totally freaked me as she msut have needed the liquid at least since it was so hot ... By the last two days, intake did get back to normal again. ... so in all ...back to square one !

Now that she is practically 5 months, she is now able to whollop the bottle when it comes to her and she is not interested ...charming ! I have learnt this past week though to chill out a bit and to give her a 10 mins break or so before trying again. 60% of the time she will take more to up her intake to total of 4-5oz ... at others no interest.

I tried making up 4oz bottle a few times, and sods law , she whinged when it all went ! ! !

Mirage .l... hope the GF book helps. I think that as long as her weight gain is healthy and not a concern, then do not be too concerned yrself, although I know it is hard to ignore.

COWS Milk ... is it ok to give at 24 weeks ?

melsy · 16/02/2004 09:19

Hi cords , my dh is heading for your neck of the woods right now (had agood cry this morning his gone for 2weeks)!!!I was going to post a thread about the same problem, it must be fairly universal when weaning onto solids. My dd also smacks the bottle away and goes mental. I find it all to complicated to change routines sleep eat etc. Having a bad time at the mo , so trying to stay chilled about it. Must get her weighed as she only takes 13oz a day if lucky. Can I introduce yogurt and cheese yet?? what about the salt content in the cheese??

melsy · 16/02/2004 23:32

Ok wish I had asked my sis earlier having reared 2 kiddies already. She suggested I cut either the 11 morning or 3 afternoon bottle. So I have gone for the 3 and u know what, dont know if its a fluke but she took both her evening bottles really well & nearly drained them. Will keep fingers crossed for tommorow. Cords my DH just called from HK, I am soooo relieved his flight was ok. Might have to get u too spy on him with his sexy colleague (sorree to digress on thread).

cords · 17/02/2004 00:17

Hi Melsy ! where is he staying in HK ? !

Remind me again (seive brain) , how old is yr DD ? 130z a day does seem little, but, is she is taking solids and gaining gd weigt then I guess do not stress.

Also, GF does advice to cut out the afternoon feed to encourage them to drink more ...

My DD is now averaging 21-24 oz now a day . I do find that she has a really low appetite at breakfast, but she does then take (generally) a bigger feed at 11 or pm. She does enjoy her dinnertime feed though, as if starved all day ! You know, her thighs look pretty damm healthy to me ! so I guess she is ok .

Hi Cords, nice to hear back from u. How is it in HK. Nice weather I hear. Glad your DD is doing well.

She's 5months (22 weeks), My word she is such a GF baby , but purely by coincidence. Its good to know that she recommends dropping the afternoon bottle. DD also has porky thighs , but havent had her weighed for weeks due to illness.

He's at the Grand standford harbour view(intercontinental), but he goes to Changsa tommmorow & then on to Shanghai. Hes due to return to the same hotel for the following week in Hong Kong. Hoping he'll have time to go to the fake night markets !!! (are they good or is it rubbish qaulity??)

cords · 17/02/2004 09:58

my DD is also same ..born 09 sep !

shanghai has a great outdoor market for fakes , cheap rip offs and DVD's ... get him to pick u up a nice Tods fake ..they are fab ... I have 4 of them and all for a snip of the original ! there are also nice tale runners, place mats ect which pple in the UK sell as "exotic " items and they are dirt cheap ...

what thread shld this conversation go under /!!! ????

Morning cords, by the time you read this Ill be in bed! & you will have been up for a few hrs.

Hows the feeding going??

My dd seems to be taking lots more now , must be having a growth spurt. Hoping to give her 3 meals a day soon, so hopfully will FINALLY be able to drop 11 dreamfeed bottle although it may be to hopeful!!! May be your DD be ready for that move to ??? May be that will increase her daily intake??

Mirage · 27/02/2004 15:13

Hi again,

How are all the babies doing? DD is still not drinking much- anywhere between 16-27 oz a day,but is enjoying her solids not realising that sneaky mummy has mixed everything with formula.

She is in her own room now & sleeping from 8.30 pm to 8am,wish I'd moved her earlier as we were obviously disturbing her before!

The past 2 days she has started gagging during milk & solid feeds & has thrown up after every meal. Not sure what is going on,but otherwise she seems fine, sleeping well ect.My hv says it could be because she has a bit of a cold.I will take her down to the GP'S on Monday if she is no better,as my friends DS did the same thing & it turned out he had severe tonsilitis.

DD was weighed today & is nearly back on the 50th percentile, she is now 16lb 6oz,having put on a pound in just over 3 wks.So am pleased about that-hope that the puking doesn't cause her to drop again.

Cords,Melsy,EmmaKB,how are things going with you ?

melsy · 01/03/2004 19:38

Good good Mirage, glad your one is weighing in well. I hope she is ok your little one, not tonsilitis??

Madame is now packing it away !!! Drains loads of bottles and LOVES her food so much.I hope it lasts. I also give her milk mixed with foods for breakfast & dinner. I also give her a yogurt to bump up the calcium/dairy.

Anyone know the equivalant to milk oz in relation to a small petit filous or baby danone yog ??? Does that make annnnnny sense that question!!!!(In a Chandler Bing type voice!!).

How you doing cords , EmmaKB ??

melsy · 11/03/2004 19:08

Cords , any news ?? Everyones disapeared from here!!

cords · 12/03/2004 00:57

hello ALL !!! what a nice welcome to catch up on this thread and hearing you guys doing well, (also nice to know that everyone is thinking of each other )

Anyway, seems like it was a battle that was eventually won by most of us .... DD loves her milk now, and will generally polish off her bottle ! She is also having three meals a day , (a la Gina ) ...

Her sleep was going soooo well ... 10pm DF then slept till 6:30ish (on odd occasions waking up cos she had moved up the cot ect ) .... Then a week ago, I dropped the DF and for 6 glorious nights she did the sleeping through all the way thing ....................... THEN THEN THEN !!!!

She had her 6 month jabs on Tues and since then I feel like things have gone all wrong again with the sleep !!!! She wakes constantly and screams, but has no fever. Last night was the third night, slight improvement so I am hoping that it was the jabs ... JUST AS I THOUGHT I WAS GETTING SOMEWHERE !!!!

Melsy, has yrs had the 6 mths jab yet ? I posted a thread last night asking if anyolne else had experienced adverse effects aside from fever ... Funny how our two little angels have struggled but now love their bottles !

Mirage ... hope yr DD is feeling better ... what was it ???

OP posts:
melsy · 12/03/2004 08:39

Cords nice to hear from you , Good to know that you are doing well.

Are the 6 month jabs the HIB booster, if so havent yet booked it in. I was also hoping to drop 10:30 DF , but she seems to drain that one , so she must need it still. It seems more logical for me to drop the 11:00 day one , as this one she now plays with!! I think I will wait with the df one for now. DD now seems to wake up during the night for a little cry, but then just drifts back off to sleep, I dont want to start anything by going in and giving her milk/water. Or is that bad of me????

Speak soon, its the afternoon therenow isnt it??

melsy · 12/03/2004 08:39

Have to go afor a bit and give dd her breakfast. & mine eventually.

cords · 12/03/2004 11:08

Melsy,, we are 8 hours ahead ... just spent a glorious afternnon in the sun , 24c and sunny and not too humid ...bet you are jealous !

Hmm, know what you mean abt the DF ... GF actually says that the 11am bottle shld be the first one to drop.

How much food does yr DD eat ? I measure by cubes and teraspoons still ... For lunch DD takes 4 cubes and for dinner 2 cubes of fruit and 4 teaspoons of baby rice ... starting slowly on breakfast ... She also takes roughly 20-22 oz milk also ...
