Physically sick with the pain of feeding just now

My left breast has been getting more and more painful through the night. Been up with poorly DC1 so was able to notice it. No lumps or redness. Just fed DS (7 months) and expected relief. Such agony I was sick.

Any ideas? I'm already dosed up on ibuprofen and paracetamol for a nasty cold.

Thrush? Mastitis? Is it a stabbing pain or an ache?

Phone out of hours. That doesn't sound right at all.

Have you a pump you can use for extra relief? I was expecting another newborn thread and shredded nips. Poor you :(

You poor thing! Is it red or hot anywhere? Do you have a temperature? If you suspect mastitis you don't want to muck about, call the doctor.

I found thrush extremely painful, google pictures of nipples with thrush and see if that looks right. Our local lactation consultant always suggests soaking your sore breast in a bowl of warm to hot water. Wish I could be more help!

Thanks for the support. I can't phone OOH now as it's a 30 mile round trip to the centre they make you go to. I have a poorly 3 year old and a baby who is currently refusing to sleep anywhere other than on me.

I've had mastitis - previously I've been able to see red areas and feel lumpy bits. Hurts too much to investigate really.

Every bit of me hurts from the cold I've got anyway, so can't tell if I've got the other 'fluey' symptoms of mastitis.

I really, really hope DH can take tomorrow off work. The children have been up since 10.30pm, between them. I haven't slept yet!

I think it's mastitis. Waiting for telephone appt with dr as they have no face to face ones today. Typical! Still very painful.

It's only one breast so unlikely to be thrush? Except that DS has had a nasty nappy rash for a week or so that I couldn't clear, so pharmacist at the weekend suggested it might be thrush and sold me canestan.

Some red patches now. It hurts all the time and more so during a feed.

I hope you have heard from the doctor by now, but if not you could perhaps try one of the breastfeeding helplines. They would not be able to diagnose, but might be able to suggest some things to discuss with your doctor?

I've had a blocked duct be really painful before (and had others which weren't remotely in the same league), with the pain worst when I was feeding, but as I remember that pain was coming from a specific part of the breast (where the blockage was, and leading back from that along the duct) rather than generally all over, so I'm not sure that sounds the same as your pain, so maybe not helpful! I hope you are feeling better soon, and have managed to get some sleep at some point.

Ow, you poor thing. I had mastitis in a blocked duct right behind the nipple - worse pain than mastitis elsewhere in the boob, if that makes sense. There wasn't anything much to see though. I've also had thrush, which started on one side. Both things were bloody painful.

I really hope you can get some advice/help in RL, and are feeling better soon.

Why don't they have any emergency appts available - that just annoys me. I'm not in the habit of wasting doctors time and question some of the 'day trippers' at my surgery but if they can't diagnose you over the phone and make a prescription of antibiotics available, you need to insist on a call out. A 30 mile round trip is unacceptable in your state and prob not safe to drive with 2 kiddies plus it's potentially affecting the feeding of a baby.

Hope you get it sorted
