I am mixed feeding my 10 week old DS. He is about 50/50 ff and bf.
My breasts themselves are so sore. All the time. Not so much my nipples, just the entire breasts. They feel bruised all the time. They are also very engirged about 4x a day, lumpy and agonisingly painful. Always fine after a feed, but then eventually the same after a few hours.
They also POUR with milk all the time. Every morning out bed is soaking wet and through the day I go through loads of b pads.
Can anyone give me any advice?
TIA

Does the amount of bfeeds change from day to day and are they around the same time? I didn't mix feed I exclusively bf but I know that if dc didn't have a full feed around the same time each day my boobs filled up for it. My dc has different nights sometimes she wakes for feeds lot the next night she might sleep through so I wake up engorged. Maybe make sure you regiment the bf to same times so boobs get used to producing for then?

They are generally around the same time, though not religiously. I'm mixed feeding on HV's advice and it's actually going well. He's a pretty settled boy, but it's just my pesky breasts giving me trouble!

It sounds like your poor boobs are still unsure how much you want them to make!

MummyIsMagic79 · 06/02/2013 18:20

Maybe you're right. I don't really know what to do.

I wonder what would happen if you stopped mix feeding and went exclusively bf? I don't know if that is crap advice, sorry - but I feel for you, I'm bf and around 5 weeks and mine are still messing about too Smile

Why did HV tell you to top up? Sounds like you have loads of milk.

iwillsleepagainsomeday · 06/02/2013 18:28

you seem to have oversupply
try blockfeeding to reduce production

none of my business but why mix feeding if you have so much milk?

MummyIsMagic79 · 06/02/2013 18:56

He was very unsettled and dropped weight, then was failing to regain it. HV came round on a day when I hadn't eaten by 5.30 and my two older DCs hadn't had my attention all day. DH is out the house til 6.30pn each eve and I was at my wits end. He was feeding non stop and she advised a bottle because I was so fraught.
Selfish reasons too, I guess. We have had a night away last week and also he goes to a crèche 2x a week for 90 mins while I go to the gym.

Totally your choice what to do but you could take the view that NOTHING is more important right now than keeping your newborn fed and yourself sane. Can you drop the bottles down to one per day and bf the rest of the time? Whatever you choose your boobs will eventUlly settle down to the pattern you set. I was still spraying everywhere and filling up to bursting before a feed at your stage. Good luck!
