Avent teats for ebm or are there more boob-tastic ones?!

I'm expecting DC2 in April, and last time I bf while giving some ebm (or occasionally formula milk) in Avent bottles, because we'd been given a load by a friend. I also had the avent manual pump which worked well for me.

DC1 did have a phase of being quite fussy on the breast for a few weeks at around 3 months, and I wondered whether that was partly down to the bottle feeding (which was about once a day or less, mainly done by DH).

I'm considering trying something different this time and wondered what people would recommend? The avent teats don't seem to be as pliable and breast-like as some of the others out there...maybe they're designed more for formula fed babies than combination feeding? I've seen on some forums you can get different teats which fit with the avent bottles.

I don't know about Avent.

For reasons I won't get into, DC1 was bottlefed for the first three weeks of life before being ebf.

DH was sent to the supermarket to get A Pump and Some Bottles, to avoid readmission. He came home with the Tommee Tippee set of pump, bottles and steriliser.

TT "closer to nature" or something do look more like a nipple than the standard narrow teat (well, they look more like my nipples, anyway) and DC1 transitioned from TTCTN to Me without demur.

Anecdotal but seemed logical to us at the time.

People at my bf group have recommended Medela Calma, Avent Natural, Yoomi, NUK, Breastworks, Dr Brown's and Tommee Tippee.

I use the Avent ones and DS took to them straight away. He only had the odd bottle of expressed milk at first, but has about 2/3 bottles a week now and swaps between them and me no problem. He's 8 months now but we still use the second size of teat ( ie next one up from the newborn one ) as I think if you use a teat with too fast a flow they can then get frustrated at the comparatively slower release of milk from the breast.

There could be other reasons for fussing at the breast too.

NUK latex teats seem to work well for bf babies, according to me and friends who have used them Smile

We started a supplementary evening bottle feed at 10 days because our LO wasn't putting on the weight so well. I was petrified that it would interfere with bf but we used the Tommee Tippee "closer to nature" bottles and tests with no problems. She is now 10 weeks and still switching very well between the two.

Was going to hop in and say NUK, but Tea beat me to it!

I personally found that the MAM teat shape (silicone) was similar to my nipples after bf more flat than round IYSWIM - I think NUK are the brand to try though if you are just giving occasional bottles :)

My breastfed baby likes pigeon slim teats. I'm not sure easy the are to find in the UK but they make the baby suck the way they do on the breast.

Thanks everyone for the good advice - I'll look into NUK then, as I believe they're compatible with Avent bottles so we wouldn't have to buy loads of new ones :-)

Yup, I've hear NUK work well. I use a Medela calma one which is supposed to mimic the breast as it requires the same action to get the milk.

We used the tommy tipee closer to nature ones. I had mastitis 3 times before DS was 8 weeks, and so swooped between boob and bottle at each feed. He always took both without a problem. Now he only gets a bottle of ebm once in a blue moon but still takes it without any issues. Only my experience but hope it helps.

Most boob-like are supposed to be the medela 'calma' ones and ones by 'The First Years'.
I didn't know about them until it was too late but didn't have much luck with the Tommee Tippee Closer To Nature ones.

I found the playtex latex teats worked really well, but they're pricey because you have to keep buying inserts for the bottles.

My 8 week old swaps happily between bf and the medela calma teat, and has done for a while.

I'm using the medela calma occasionally and have had no problems so far but my ds2 is only 5 weeks. They have to make a vacuum with their mouth like breastfeeding to get any milk out. They're bloody expensive though so I've only got three!

Another vote for Nuk latex, though the teats didn't fit Avent bottles - or rather, they seemed to fit til DS pulled on them... (Maybe I did something wrong, though, because I read online that they ought to fit fine. He only had a weekly bottle though so I just gave in and bought a Nuk one, rather than working out why it had gone wrong.)

I'd go for tommy tippie, very boob like, are quite big and round with the smaller nipple type part

Avent was useless with my ds. He just couldn't get on with them.

The nuk ones do look quite nice, I have no experience with them as of yet though
