breastfeeding 9 month old twice a day

My DD is 9 months old. She was ebf until 6 months old, then we introduced solids. By 8 months she was on 3 square meals a day and breastfeeding 3-4 times a day.

Over xmas her appetite for solids increased and her portion sizes are bigger. She then dropped down to 3bf a day. Just yesterday she has cut herself down to bf first thing, then around 9/10pm. Today I fed her less solids to try coax her into taking her 4pm bf, she was having absolutely none of it! Tried several times and she wouldn't even try latch on.

She then scoffed her dinner and is now in bed. What should I do?

SOunds about right to me. Either end of the day and perhaps one mid pm if she'll take it. I would just aim to get lots of yogurt, cheese and milk puss into her diet.

Milk puss sounds disgusting....I meant milk puds

If its your DD leading the reduction, I wouldn't worry. She'll take what she needs :)

It is really very difficult to tell how much milk an older baby takes in a feeding session. You can't really gauge it by how full/not you feel, nor by the time they feed for. She may well be taking a bit more at both of her feeds to make up for the dropped one.

I think the marvellous thing about Breastfeeding an older baby is that you can trust them to do the right thing and your body will respond. You're past the days of establishing/building supply, and your baby is old enough to want to survive! Unless they're really ill, they really won't starve themselves, unlike a newborn who sleeps to preserve energy when they really need to feed.

Relax, your DD can lead this decision :)

Hehe is really does!

Thanks, I have been making sure she has lots of milk based products in between meals. I make all her food too so have been making sure she has lots of fruit and veg.

My now 10 month old has done the same. Loves solids and consequently only has 2 or occasionally 3 a day. Big fat tum tum though!

Phew those early days of establishing the supply were stressful enough!

Thanks I will try sit back, relax and let dd lead the way Smile

Hi, looking for yet more advice...

DD has since yesterday dropped the morning feed and is only taking a dream feed. This can't be normal surely? I'm worried as I thought she would need a certain amount of milk before she is 12 months?

Hope someone, anyone, can shed some light on the situation for me...

Bump!

Op I'm watching with interest and getting worried reading the other threads particularly the hv complaint one...

My almost 10 month old has 2 bf, morning and night. This was hv advised (too early in my opinon) so I followed ds lead and he reduced himself from 3-2 feeds by about 8 months.

Interested to see what advice you get as I think my ds probably doewnt need the morning feed, I'm sure he would rather have breakfast... I keep doing it because I read threads in which people are giving babies older than mine more than I am!

Really confused and hoping someone who knows what they're talking about can point us in the right direction! Sorry for hijack..
