Mine is only 2 weeks old and he has always done this! My theory is that he knows he likes sucking his hand (we saw him do this on a scan at 20 weeks) and that he thinks that is how to get something to suck. It is quite tricky to hold down both hands while putting him to my breast. But that doesn't really explain why yours has started doing it recently.

Normal - babies start to explore like this at around this age, and maybe he's just interested to feel what's in his mouth with his fingers! Loads of babies do it. He'll probably stop soon. You could simply take him off when he does it, and put him on again if he seems to want more milk/comfort.

My DD does this too. She is 5mths and now tries to put her thumb in her mouth while breastfeeding! but all she manages to do is pull my breast out.
She it teething big time and I put it down to this. 2 teeth so far and two more nearly through. I hope it will stop soon.

I'm with tiktok on this one. My ds insisted on putting his fingers in his mouth while feeding. He was always a voracious eater and he grew out of the fingers thing and was never a thumb/finger sucker. He's now 3.
