14 week baby taking an hour to feed

My DS is 14 weeks old and a very slow feeder. He always has been - he had a tongue tie, which was snipped at 5 weeks old because he was constantly hungry & feeding with poor weight gain. After the surgery his weight gain improved, and he became slightly more efficient at feeding, taking around 30-40 minutes (instead of 2 hours!).

But around 2 weeks ago he started to take longer to feed again. Initially I thought may it was a growth spurt, but it's still going on. Most feeds take around 50-60 minutes, and he feeds every 3 hours or so during the day, and usually twice overnight. The night feeds in particular are hard work, although he is very good at settling after them, but i am usually still awake 1.5-2 hrs for each feed by the time I am back asleep.

Is this normal? I don't think he's comfort sucking (although he does do that sometimes, if I let him) he is constantly gulping & swallowing. I would have thought he would be getting more efficient by now!

I think that feeding every 3 hours and only having 2 night feeds at such a young age is actually very good although I appreciate it might not feel that way to you!

If he is swallowing then he is feeding, but if you want to speed thing up a little try some breast compressions.

As for the night feeds, have you tried lying down and feeding?

Sometimes tongue ties need snipping a second time as they can reattach. Could you get whoever snipped it first time to have another look?
