Diarrhoea & cold in 13 wk bf baby

Hi my dd has had diarrhoea for 8 days. She's had a cold for 9. Been to the doc 3 times & have had a sample of her poo sent off (results back on wed). She's well enough in herself - v snotty which comes out as green mucous in her poo sometimes. She does cry as though she's in pain sometimes (assume it may be the mucous giving her a tummy ache). Gp not concerned as she's not dehydrated but I'm a little worries that its gone on so long.

Bit of background - she did have reflux & was on gaviscon & ranitidine for it, but she's been much better since I gave up dairy 2 weeks ago & has been completely medication free for well over a week.

Has anyone else's DC experienced diarrhoea for this long & should I be concerned?

Colds do go on a lot longer in babies - two or three weeks is normal. Are her poos really runny or just mucousy? The cold will definitely affect them, but bm poos are always pretty squelchy.

Yes it is definately diarrhoea - there are no seedy bits & it's liquid as it comes out of her (sorry!).

If she has CMP Allergy it could just be her gut readjusting now you've cut it out. CMPI can cause secondary lactose intolerance...it may be her body needs time to start up lactase priduction efficiently agsin. Not enough lactase = green runny poo.

Really narmada? I didn't know that. She hasn't got green poo though - only the mucousy bits so not sure. She does seem a bit better now though thankfully

Not necessarily green - but does have a distinctive smell - bleurrrrrgh.

Are you esting soy instesd of dairy? is common for CMP babies to be allergic also to soy.

Yes it is rather smelly & slimy, nice. I hadn't thought of that. Her reflux has been much better since coming off dairy, but she still vomits a bit & I have been eating more soy (as replacement) since coming off dairy. Her diarrhoea started approx 6 days after coming off dairy - could that be a reaction to the soy do you think?

Could be. In the states they often refer to it as MSPI (milk soy protein allergy) rather than CMPI. I think the estimates are somewhere in the region of fifty percent of babies who have CMPI Also having soy sensitivities.

It could be rotavirus or noro I guess... let us know what the tests say when you get results back tomorrow.

Ok so just rang for the results & they're "normal". So, what now - should I wait for her cold to go & see if her diarrhoea clears up? Fwiw it is getting less frequent & she is now peeing a bit more which I'm taking as a good sign. So frustrating though, just when I think she's getting better, she has another dose!

That's good. Glad she is getting better and diarrhea getting less frequent. Lots of nasty cold-type viruses can cause diarrhea too - maybe she had one of those (wouldn't have shown up in a stool sample I don't think).

I would just sit it out. If it doesn't improve, either back to doctors or try excluding soya too.

You could try going back onto dairy yourself and see how you do with that?

Prob with that zuleika is that her reflux was really bad with the dairy - lots of screaming in the eve & I just don't want to take the risk of it coming back. Think ill just wait & see as narmada says. Thanks guys!

They do grow out of reflux though, and a lot changes around the 3m mark. The screaming in the evening is pretty standard for 3-12 weeks.
