Breast feeding should be a matter of personal choice. I started off breastfeeding ds, but it didn't go well, but was bullied by HV into persevering in spite of almost six weeks of physical and mental agony on my part and ds losing weight rapidly. I didn't want to admit defeat, and at no point did hv suggest putting him on bottle. Took the bull by the horns myself after I'd been expressing and using a bottle. I was much happier, DS loved looking up at me. Put him fully on formula at 7wks and we never looked back, but I felt ostracised by hv and breastfeeding friends and made to feel like i was a bad parent. This should still remain a matter of choice and women should not be made to feel bullied or pressurised into breast feeding when they either cant or don't want to. It's whatever makes you and your relationship with your baby happy that is important. My hv was not, i believe, acting in the interests of my ds or me, but in keeping her stats looking healthy in meeeting goverment guidelines. women should not be bullied by anyone in matters of childcare. Making them feel worthless and a poor parent is inexcusable. I do, in spite of this rant, believe that breast is best and will try again with no. 2 due in December, but will not put myself through the mill if it isn't working and switch to bottle. That is and always should remain my choice.

But lots of mums want to breastfeed but give up because they don't have the support and help in hospital or afterwards. No one is saying you MUST breastfeed, we're saying we need help with it. My story echos yours daisybump and I bf my second much longer because I knew what I was doing.
