How often do your newborns wake during the night to feed?

Mine sleeps for only and hour tops before waking up again. And needs approx and hour of attention (feeding/burping/changing) before doing back to sleep for another hour. So in getting an hour on, an hour off, an hour on etc

He is 2 weeks old - is this normal? I've asked a similar question before I think but can't find the thread now. Much more confident with breast feeding but was hoping for less night feeds and longer stretches of sleep by now.

Hi, that sounds about right. Mine is only 6 days. Last night she fed for 5 hours and slept for 1 before waking again!

I think I remember from dd1 that by about 6 weeks she was managing a few hours sleep at a time. Very annoying that dd2 will sleep for 4 hours during the day but only an hour at night!

Sounds about right for a nb (though I have to say I just used to feed back to sleep - never bothered with winding because it comes up by itself if it's going to and only changed for a poo). By about a month DD was feeding every two hours around the clock and that carried on until 10m.

Sounds about right I think, if I can remember that far back! I didn't bother with burping either and only changed them if they'd pooed.

As for getting them to take the main sleep at night, there are things that you can do to gently encourage this. If you take LO outside (wrap up warm obviously) for some time each day, ideally in the morning, the sunlight will help LO to sleep at night and differentiate day from night. Some Mums also say that changing LO out of baby grows in the morning and putting them in day clothes, and keeping the daytimes noisy and bright and night quiet and dark helps too.
