Breast feeding but got my period?

Ds is only 5.5 weeks old, I am mixed feeding but bf at every feed followed by formula top up. I appear to be bleeding, could this be my period, and if so does that mean my milk will stop?

it doesnt mean your milk will stop at all, but it does mean youre fertile again

As far as I know, it's completely normal to get your period back this early if you are mix feeding. By giving a formula top up, you're not bf-ing enough (please dont take that the wrong way!) to keep your periods away. Saying that, some people are just unlucky and get their period back straight away anyway.

it means you have ovulated but doesnt mean your milk will stop

ChocolateCoins · 25/11/2012 08:14

And it won't affect your milk so don't worry Smile

It's ok :-). Everyone gets it back eventually. For most people it is later on when feeds ge more spaced out, or when the baby starts eating solid food alongside feeding, but mix feedn is essentially the same thing.

Your milk won't stop. I exclusively bf my two until 6 mo, and my periods were back after 12 weeks or so both times. So, it isn't necessarily because you are giving the top ups. For some of us this is just the way it is ( and the reason why bf is not a reliable method of contraception)!

Oh phew thanks, was a bit confused! And thanks for the semsitive responses re mixed feeding - I know it's not for everyone but it works for us!

I got mine when DS was 4 months old. He's EBF. I read that things that can help keep your period away for longer are EBF, feeding at night and allowing comfort sucking (instead of a dummy). I'm doing all those things but still got it :-( boo hiss. Apparently it can make your milk taste different and your baby might fuss a bit while you've got your period but I haven't noticed a difference. I also thought you wouldn't get your period as long as you were breastfeeding (although I know you can get pregnant) but it seems its quite normal to get it. Shows how much I know!

Flipflops, loads of women think if you are ebf on demand your cycle won't return. I had two midwives tell me that breastfeeding = contraception. Very very glad I didn't follow that bit of advice!

BarbaraBar · 25/11/2012 12:27

Please be aware that you are fertile! I have less than a year between my 2 dc because I thought I couldn't get pg when EBFing. Smile

You'll be fertile again. I got my period back within the first 6 weeks, doing top-ups like you.

Get yourself along to the GP and get some contraceptive! I went back to Cerazette, which stops my periods all together.
